September 30, 1971 Soccer team prepares for the big tournament this weekend with a scrimmage againsrGeneva College. Although the scrimmage saw the Cubs go down in defeat, the match heralded hopes for bigger and better things for the Behrend team. By Tony Alo Sports reporter Behrend Campus will host its second annual invitational soccer tournament this weekend, October I and 2. Invading the Cub's home field will be three rugged opponents who promise to pose a stiff challenge to Behrend's hopes of a second straight tournament crown. The Cubs won the affair last year with a 3 -1 victory over Altoona Campus. In the first match, at 1:30 Friday afternoon, a scrappy Slippery Rock J.V. team clashes with tough Erie County College of Buffalo, New - York: 'Tlie - Rockets were 3 - 5 - 2 last season, while the Erie County team compiled a 5 - 5 record. Our own Behrend Cubs meet Lakeland College in the 3:30 nightcap. This is the third all time meeting between these two soccer powers with Behrend holding a 2 - 0 edge. Lakeland had a deceiving 1-10 -1 record in 1970 against powerful opposition, including nationally ranked teams. The consolation game will start at 12 noon on Saturday while the big championship game begins at 2:00. The outlook for this year's Behrend team is very bright with a host of returning lettermen from last year's 5 - 5 squad and a group of sensational freshmen prospects. Behrend Colle • Lists Goilievww Events By Dave Ruef Sports Editor Herb Lauffer is a hell of a coach and one hell of a man. The Behrend soccer coach, now in his third season at Behrend, being the classiest coach on this campus, he sets his own style: white shoes, expensive looking suits and a sharp announcer-type voice. His air of professionalism seems to spread to everyone who comes in contact with him. His players respect him because they know he will mold thaw into true athletes. The players want to win and they gladly accept his two-a-day workouts because they want to be in top physical condition for the big tourney this weekend. Practice starts at 7:15 a.m. But Lauffer renli7es that there are more important things than winning. That's why he entered the coaching field. "I always got more out of athletics than just the business of winning or losing. The opportunity to work with young people,,,and to work with athletes and try to develop them and to mold them into a cohesive Joe Paterno Football Show on WWYN Each Saturday at 1:20 p.m. the Joe Paterno Football Show is on WWYN. When asked if Behrend could be termed a "stepping - stone", - the 29-year-old Butler native admitted, "I can't say I'm not looking. I came here with my sights set eventually on a small four-year institution. I am willing to =give this campus a chance, however, I'm not going to move for the sake of moving." Sports Calendar today's trend is away from emphasizing athletics, Coach Lauffer replied, "I guess the trend is slightly away from it, but with that trend athletes are more important than they've ever been." As to what a person gains participating in sports at any place but a major school, the Coach answered, "I think there's that self-satisfaction of realizing that you're dedicating yourself, you're sacrificing a great deal and you're not taking the easy way out. It's all apart of your self-discipline. Psychologically as well as physically, man needs competition. He has that in stinctive nature to compete, to play, to organize some form of physical activity." "A boy gives himself to our program and gets a lot from it in just this self-actualization type of thing where he actualizes himself as being the best. He may not go a hundred per cent on it, but he's trying to be the best at whatever he's doing." Herb Lauffer understands athletes. Herb Lauffer spells success.
