Recommendations Made To EOP
In Order To Improve Program
The Educational Opportunity
Program at The Pennsylvania
State University should be
continued and strengthened 'as a
service agency dedicated to the
well-being of EOP students.
One of the recommendations of
a seven-man committee ap
pointed early in July to review
the EOP with the aim of
strengthening the program.
Reporting to Dr. Robert E.
Dunham, assistant vice president
for instruction, the committee
further recommended that the
work of EOP should be the visible
and audible advocate of EOP
students in their efforts to secure
an education; should provide
tutoring services, academic
follow-up where needed, and non
academic counseling. The EOP
should assist in recruitment,
selection, admission, housing and
financing EOP students; and
should coordinate and facilitate
the colleges' efforts on behalf of
EOP students.
Commenting on the reports of
the review team which he termed
as "constructive and very helpful
in the reshaping and
strengthening of the EOP," Dr.
Dunham emphasized that the
University has committed itself
to make every reasonable effort
to provide those necessary
educational opportunities and
student services that are
required by EOP students.
He said that some actions
already had been taken to
strengthen EOP, based on
recommendations of the three
subgroups of the review team.
The organizational structure
of the office has been changed
and the creation of other
positions which are designed to
bring services directly and ef
ficiently to students. In this new
organizational structure there
have been created four cum-.
seling positions, one tutoring
coordinator position, and six
graduate assistantships.

authority for financial aid for

Office of Student Financial Aid.
Steps are under way to
recruit and appoint a new EOP
director.
Plans are being made to
involve Commonwealth Cam
puses more directly and more
independently in the EOP
operations, especially the ad
missions operation.
A number of priorities
within the office have been
reordered to emphasize student
needs and services.
The subgroup concerned with
staff personnel, according to Dr.
Dunham, considered specific
personnel in the office, the
organization of these personnel,
and the relationship of these
personnel to other agencies of the
University.
Concerning specific personnel
in the EOP office, the subgroup
concluded that "it is evident that
some employees did not match
the requirements established for
the positions" and recommended
certain personnel changes.
Reporting on program goals
and services for students, the
review subgroup made lour
conclusive statements as well as
the general recommendations.
The conclusive statements are :
1. The present goals of EOP
are appropriate; namely, to
contribute to the total effort of the
University as it seeks to satisfy

The Erie Playhouse will open
the '7l season with one of the
most honored of American plays.
"Death Of A Salesman." This
dramatic hit won the coveted
Pulitzer Prize and also the N. Y.
Drama Critics' Award the year it
was first produced in New York,
a double honor won by only two
other plays in history---"A
Streetcar Named Desire" and
"The Time Of Your Life."
Chief among many outstanding
features of "Death of a
Salesman" are Miller's portrayal
of the daily living of many
Americans as they struggle for a
livelihood, and his delicate
mixture of emotional power and
humorous reporting. Brooks
Atkinson critic of the New York
Times commented that the play

themselves but refer to the whole
area of concern in the public

2. The program or activities of
EOP have addressed themselves
to satisfying needs that are
consistent with their goals.
3. While it is clear that the
operation of EOP has been less
effective than is desirable or
acceptable, it is likewise clear
that those directly responsible for
EOP understand and are per

committed to the achievement of
its goals.
4. Two major shortcomings of
EOP to date are related to its
general structure and its
presently ambiguous place
within the University and thus
can reduce its effectiveness.
a. There have been deficien
cies in decisions regarding
personnel selection, program
building, selection of priorities,
assignment of responsibilities,
etc. .
b. There has been an un
satisfactory level of coordination
with academic - units and the

"Involve Youth" New Theme
Of Circle K Organization
"Involve Youth" is the theme
of the Circle K. this year. A
halfway house for juvenile
delinquents, drug education and
community betterment are a few
of the proposed plans.
The Circle K is an international
service organization sponsored
by the Kiwanis, and the most
active organization on the
Behrend Campus, in which
members are not elected.
In the past, the Circle K was
quite effective in assisting
disadvantaged youth from St.
Joseph's Home for Children.
Basketball games, snowball
battles, pool parties, and dinners
for the orphans were sponsored.
Other projects included a
booksale that eliminated the
disorder of posting signs. This
was an enormous success for all
of the students on campus. An
attempt was also made to acquire
mimeograph and office equip
ment for every Behrend club.
The potential of this
organization this year is over
whelming. They will fight for
whatever they believe will
benefit everyone on campus or in
the community at large. "People
helping People" is their motto.
