Barrett hopes to kick start her marketing career
For some students, the hardest part of
college may be choosing a major and
developing a career plan.
For sophomore Kasey Barrett, that
part was easy. Barrett
majors in marketing with
a minor in economics.
She said “it was always
marketing,” which she
has been interested in
since her freshman year
in high school.
Although she was sure
Kasey Barrett
of her interest in market
ing, she says that at one point, she might
have been interested in some sort of
major in the field of psychology.

Behrend's Got Talent, which was or
ganized and sponsored by the Matchbox
Players, started off with a video that
showed what the entry tickets and any
money raised during event went to: The
Wayne Middle School.
The video highlighted the poor quality
of the school, which was filled with dirty
hallways, broken lights, missing ceiling
tiles, water stains on the ceiling tiles,
dented lockers, and many other signs of
poor condition.
The show got off to a great start with
Jeremy Omard, a freshman, playing the
piano. After the next act of Terrance
Norwood singing, an up-and-coming co
median took the stage.
While unexpected, the man enter
tained the crowd of well over a hundred
people with the lively details of his dys
functional family, his mom’s insanity,
and of people living in trailers in Mis
souri.
Next, two dance teams took the stage
to get the crowd pumped up. One of the

"In All Seriousness" to teach summer improv course
Students living in Erie this summer
and are interested in theater are in luck.
Bill De Lozier, member of improv
comedy troupe In All Seriousness, will
be teaching an improv course down
town over a six-week period, two
classes a week.
The course is open to anyone over 21:

Women's tennis team in need of players
It may be the end of the semester, but
for coaches and recruiters, it is only the
beginning for fall sports.
Recently, e-mails were sent out to fe
males at Behrend asking for anyone
with tennis experience to contact Jeff
Barger, the tennis coach at Behrend.
“This is something I do every year,”
Barger said. “Normally, there’s talent on
campus that isn’t aware of the team or
some good players that haven’t tried out
yet.”
As most know, it starts in the high
school level, when coaches and scouts
start to observe potential recruits, as

According to Barrett, the MIS class
appealed to her because she enjoys the
technical aspect of running a business.
When it comes to classes she has
taken that didn’t pertain to marketing or
economics, some were challenging and
some were not-so-challenging.
“1 struggle with my business law class
because it doesn’t really interest me in
the way that other classes have," Barrett
said.
According to Barrett, her Human
Body class was less challenging.
“It was just a lot of memorization and
regurgitation back on the tests, which I
think is fairly easy to do. [The informa

night involved two students playing the
role of a time-traveling scientist and his
quirky friend taking trips back into the

to refuel themselves with a seemingly

The rest of the night included singing

Nathan Myers, a hard-rock band from
(for those who have never done theater)
to more complicated techniques.
The goal of the course is to “shake up
the students, make them be more cre
ative...and to be entertaining.”
De Lozier would like to lend his 25+
years of performing on stage to “give
them an insight into the relationship
with the audience and what will ulti
mately turn out to be their success.”
The premise of improv isn't just mak

early as sophmore year. Barger tries to
start looking for talent in Erie and ex
pand to surrounding areas, such as
Pittsburgh and Buffalo.
Usually, for every 100 recruits, there
will be ten interested. However, it is un
likely that all 10 will join in the fall.
The program hopes to match new
players with not only the tennis pro
gram, but also the eductional opportu
nites as well. Of course, there are
opportunities for prospects to stay
overnight for a weekend.
“We try to get them to stay overnight
for weekend, usually when there is a
match in the spring,” Barger said.
“They are able to see the college and
see the level that they will play.”

career," she said.
Barrett’s path to success began even
before she attended college. She got a
head start in gaining experience with
her future career when she took market
ing classes in her junior and senior
years in high school.
Since attending Behrend, her proud
est accomplishment has been getting
her current internship. Barrett works as
a marketing assistant at the Center for

“I write a lot of the copy... I've worked
on brochures, press releases, and put
ting together different marketing cam

“It's increasing the amount of options
of things you have to think of.”
De Lozier says that taking an improv
class helps in any situation that you
have to deal with conflict.
“Having the basic training from im
prov, you are equipped with more solu
tions, bigger comfort zone.”
The environment will be similar to the
popular TV show Whose Line Is It Any
way? because they take suggestions
from the audience.
When this is all in place, they will usu
ally get three incoming freshmen to
play.
As for the e-mails sent this year,
Barger had eight responses, which is a
higher number than normal.
“Normally, I only get two or three re
sponses,” Barger said.
“This year, I have already gotten eight
repsonses, some who 1 have recruited in
the past, but decided not to play fresh
man year.”
Usually, there is a meeting for inter
ested students, giving them basic infor
mation, such as commitment and try out
information.
“l try to give them a chance to see
what they have skill-wise in the spring,”

For the future, she has set her goals
clearly and her sights high.
“I plan to graduate on time. I don’t
want to take any extra semesters, be
cause that can get costly. I want to find
a marketing position with an ad agency
or a place that incorporates technology,
like a Microsoft or Google.”
Barrett’s advice to her fellow students
at Behrend are to “keep up with class
work because as long as you do, classes
aren’t as hard as everyone makes them
out to be.”
Talent? The winner was none other than
Sonia Rosales, a long-time participant in
the program's seven year history, and
also a previous winner.
But it can be sure that even though
there was one winner, all those who par
ticipated in the program, including the
audience, left as winners by being
greatly entertained by fellow students.
The difference is that Whose Line
records for two hours and show the best
twenty-two minutes, and live perform

“You have to be good the whole time.
Lots more pressure."

Barger said. “But I invite everyone to try
out again in the fall.”
Even though the women’s tennis team
was one of the largest in the conference
this past year (17 members), there are
still challenges, especially with Penn
State campuses.
This year, two seniors are graduating,
a student is transferring, and there is
also the understanding that anyone
could drop at anytime.
“There are usually three or four every
year,” Barger said.
“The classes get smaller as the years
go by, but some do stay all four years.”

Corrections
In the front page article
"Rylee Dorer's fight for
life" that published in last
week's Behrend Beacon,
we made two mistakes.
First, we said that Molly
Thomas and James Wolfe
were former Behrend
THON presidents, with
Thomas being the current
one.
In actuality, Behrend
THON does not have pres
idents. It is run by chairs.
Carly Lapp and Erin
Moran are the current
Behrend THON chairs.
Secondly, we said that
Rylee Dorer was born on
Oct. 1, 2001. She was ac
tually bom on Oct. 3.
We regret the errors.
