Indianapolis' most recent appear ance was Super Bowl XLI in 2007, a 29-17 victory over the Chicago Bears. Jim Caldwell is in his first season as head coach for Indianapolis but has men's teams, respectively. Caldwell was the assistant coach at Penn State from 1986-92, where he won a national championship in 1986 with the Nittany Lions. What may be the most interesting story line of Super Bowl XLIV is the fact that the New Orleans Saints will be competing in it. push myself at practice to do so." For such a large team, it is impressive that they can come together and support each other in every event. "As a team, our strength is the strong support we show for each other," junior Jenna Fatica said. "We are with each other everyday, and we each practice. We all try to push ourselves and our teammates to perform at the highest level possible." The season is long from over, and this opener has given the track team a great place to start the season. With the next meet on Feb. 6 at Mount Union Col lege, the team feels prepared to improve for next time. "Most of us can say that the first meet at West Virginia was This will be the first Super Bowl ap pearance ever for the Saints, and the city is abuzz with excitement. In the Saints' 43-year existence in the league, they have never been to the Super Bowl, and it has been a long awaited experience. "It's a pretty surreal moment," quar terback Drew Brees said. "You think back to four years ago, coming here post-Katrina, Sean Payton's first year. We had a goal and a dream back then. It was an opportunity to play for a Super Bowl, and it feels great." Brees led the Saints to their best reg ular season record in franchise history at 13-3, and the offense was at the top of nearly all offensive categories. New Orleans ranked first in points per game with 31.9, first in yards per game with 403.8 and were in the top 10 for passing and rushing yards per game. Brees had a stellar year with 34 touchdowns and only 11 interceptions. He put up 4,388 passing yards and a 109.6 passer rating. Head coach Sean Payton is in his fourth year as head coach for the orts Saints, and this will be his second trip to the Super Bowl. He was the offensive coordinator for the New York Giants when they reached the Super Bowl XXXV in 2000. Both teams have a great deal of re spect for one another, and the head coaches stress this fact. "They present a lot of problems, ob viously," Caldwell said of the Saints. "They have a number of weapons. Drew Brees is certainly a talented quarterback, extremely accurate guy, who spreads the ball around quite a bit. With the weapons he has, he can give you some problems." Payton has just as much respect for the opponents' quarterback as Cald well does. "He does a great job with the snap count, he's got a great grasp of the of fense," Payton said. "As to his ability to to direct traffic and put them in the best place possible, I think he does that better than anyone." Super Bowl XLIV will take place Sunday, Feb. 5 at 6:25 p.m. in Miami.
