Empty Bowls lunch
relieves empty stomachs
As part of Hunger and Homless
ness Week 2009, Behrend students
helped to raise money for United
Way and spread awareness of
hunger and homelessness.
The Empty Bowls lunch is a na
tional and international event that
usually happens during weeks or
events that deal with hunger and
homelessness.
According to Cynara
Stubbs, Coordinator of
the Center for Service
and the Smith Chapel,
the concept of Empty
Bowls is to promote
awareness of hunger,
donating funds to or
ganizations that help
with hunger, and to pro
mote art education.
The main idea is that
"somewhere someone's bowl is
empty, and by participating you fill
that person's bowl," says Stubbs.
To make this event possible,
Stubbs sent out letters early in the
semester to places that make ceram
ics, middle schools, and art muse
ums. An eighth grade ceramics class
from North East Middle School do

Catherine ' Franks
added, "I think it's beau

The money made
at the Empty Bowls
lunch will be donated to
United Way. At ten dol
lars for the bowl and the
soup, the event man
aged to make 250 dol
lars in two hours, according to
Stubbs.
"Weeks like this happen across the
nation at different universities. It's
important that everyone is aware of
social justice issues such as hunger
and homelessness and what we can
do to aid in those causes so that they
no longer exist," she says.
