Lions shut out Grove City Darryl Clark: Airborne [f Last week's sports results

staff writer
Last year, the Behrend’s
men’s soccer team lost to Grove
City 2-1 in double overtime.
This year, however, the out
come was different.
Recently ranked in the Na
tional Soccer Coaches Associa
tion of America Great Lakes
Region Poll, Behrend defeated
the Grove City Wolverines on
Sept. 16 in a 1-0 shutout.
Despite the score, Behrend
dominated the field against the
Wolverines. Scoring quickly for
Behrend was sophomore mid-

fielder Aaron Meehl, heading
the ball in off of a corner kick
from junior midfielder Josh Teti
during the fifth minute of the
first half.
Behrend would have numer
ous chances on goal through
out the first half.
Unable to get past Behrend’s
defense, the Wolverines would
not have an answer until the
beginning of the second half.
Sophomores Adam Brewer
and Mack Lloyd of Grove City
had the Wolverines only goal
scoring opportunities at the be
ginning of the second half, with
two shots. Both shots were
saved by senior goaltender
Dustin Walker.
Towards the end of the
game, freshman defender
Danny Poljak had an opportu
nity off of a corner kick from
junior Brian Bodnar. Poljak’s
header hit the post and went
out of bounds.
“Last year our team lost focus
in the final minutes of each half
and conceded two goals, this
year we came out and put in a
90 minute effort and that’s
what it takes to win,” Walker
said.
Behrend will look to continue
their winning record of 4-1-1 on
Saturday at 3 p.m. against rival
Frostburg State at the Behrend
Fields.

At the rate Penn State quar
terback Darryl Clark is picking
apart defenses, he may be able
to lead the Nittany Lions to a
National Title.
Clark most recently com
pleted 20 of 31 passes for 240
yards and three touchdowns
against Syracuse.
The departure of star re
ceivers Derrick Williams, Jor
dan Norwood and Deon Butler
left Clark with a plethora of un
known commodities at wide
out.
The only certainty for Clark
was that he would still have
tailbacks Evan Royster and
Stephfon Green to carry the of
fensive attack, but with Penn
State’s running attack being
more of an anomaly than a
threat, Clark has had only him
self to rely on to spark the of
fense.
The unknown commodities
have stepped up, too, and are
quickly dawning a new lineage
of Penn State receivers.
The group is led by the tri
fecta of Graham Zug, Derek
Moye and Chaz Powell, all of
whom are larger than last
year’s targets for Clark.
The three have combined for
28 catches, 391 yards and four
touchdowns in Penn State’s
first two games.
Clark has distributed the ball
to 12 receivers for 593 passing
yards and six touchdowns.
While the passing game
flourishes, little presence in the
running game has stalled many
drives in Penn State’s first
two games.

Darryl Clark preapres to launch a pass.
The most alarming sign of
the offensive line’s woes was at
the end of Penn State’s second
drive against Syracuse.
After driving 93 yards to
Syracuse’s three-yard line the
Nittany Lions attempted to
pound the ball in the end zone
four times but were stood up by
the Orangemen.
The Lions are coasting on
Clark’s arm, but he needs oth
ers to step up for the Penn State
offense to be a complete pack
age and not just a one trick
pony.
