• A resident student re
ported that his bicycle lock
was stolen at Almy Hall
shortly before midnight the
night of Sept. 2.
• A BB hole in a window at
Ohio Hall was reported to po
lice at 10:00 a.m. on Sept. 2.
• Police responded to a re
port of an underage party in
Perry Hall on Aug. 28, shortly
before midnight.
• Police cited a student for
underage drinking in Niagara
Hall at 1:20 a.m. on Aug. 29.
• Penn State Erie Police
Services responded to an inci
dent of a stolen bicycle on
Aug. 28 around 9:15 p.m.

• PSP Erie responded to a
hit-and-run crash on the inter
section of Buffalo Rd. and
Nagle Rd. in Harborcreek
Township. According to re
ports, an unknown female
driver with long straight dark
hair, driving a white sedan,
fled the scene of the accident

UGANDA-At least two peo
ple have been killed in
Uganda's capital, Kampala, in
clashes between police and ri
oting supporters of a tradi-
tional king. Police fired tear
gas at the protesters who
hurled stones and burned
tires. The demonstrators
protested against the govern
ment's attempts to stop the
king of Buganda from visiting
a region near Kampala where
violence was feared.

vast river dredge
NIGERIA-Nigeria has
started a vast operation to
dredge the Niger River to en
able boats to carry goods from
the Atlantic Ocean to remote
villages in the interior. The $36

Opposition to New
Sanctions Against
Iran
MOSCOW-Foreign Minister
Sergey V Lavrov on Thursday
all but ruled out imposing new
sanctions against Iran over its
nuclear program, brushing
aside growing Western con-
cerns that Iran had made sig
nificant progress in a bid for
nuclear weapons.
Mr. Lavrov said he believed
that a new set of proposals
that Iran gave to European na
tions on Wednesday offered a
viable basis for negotiations to
end the dispute.

4. Poverty rate
rose in 2008, Cen
sus reveals
In the recession, the nation’s
poverty rate climbed to 13.2
percent last year, up from 12.5
percent in 2007, according to
an annual report released
Thursday by the Census Bu
reau. The report also docu-
mented a decline in
employer-provided health in
surance and in coverage for
adults.
The rise in the poverty rate,
to the highest level since 1997,
portends even larger increases
this year, which has registered
far higher unemployment than
in 2008, economists said.

gases and that time was run

6. NASA tests stage
of new rocket
SALT LAKE CITY-the Na
tional Aeronautics and Space
Administration successfully
test fired the first stage of a
new rocket that might soon be
cancelled.
The firing was the first full
scale demonstration of a major
component of the Ares 1
rocket that NASA has been de
veloping for the past four
years to replace the space
shuttles, which are scheduled
to be retired next year.
