The Behrend golf team came
in first place out of the Division
111 level in the Behrend Spring
Invitational at Peak n' Peek's
lower course.
The outing was the last home
match for the two seniors, Jon
Arrigo and Bill Weeks.
According to the Behrend
website, the Penn State
Behrend blue team and
Medaille College both finished
with a score of 309. With this
score, the Blue and White won
the NCAA Division 111 level. In
Division II play, Gannon was
the winner, shooting an overall
290 on the day.
"We played really well,"
freshman Kevin Koerbel said.
"Everyone in the blue team
[the number one team] shot
under 80. It was wet outside,
but we did well."
Junior Joe Nelson led the
Behrend Lions as he shot a 74
on the day. Both Koerbel and
Arrigo scored a 78 at the invi
tational.
According to head coach
James Bowen, nine men's
teams and two women's teams
participated in the event.
"Four of the AMCC schools
that usually participate in our
tournament were missing due
to early finals so the field will
not be a complete AMCC
field," Bowen said. "I have
four teams from Division II
competing also."
Junior Rene Menjivar said
that Gannon was led by Bobby
Scalise who shot a score of 69.
The AMCC teams that com
peted in the invitational were
La Roche and Medaille. Pitt-
Bradford, Pitt-Greensburg,
Hilbert, and Penn State
Altoona were the four AMCC
schools who could not partici
pate. Other Division 111
schools involved were Thiel
and Daemen College.
The four Division II schools
that were part of the outing
included Gannon, Mercyhurst,
Slippery Rock, and Lake Erie
College.
"We have separate DII and
DIII trophies," Bowen
explained. "We [Division lII]
don't compete against them;
they just participate in the out
ing."
Before the Behrend
Invitational, the team was in

spring season
"So far this spring it has
been pretty tough," Bowen
said. "We have competed in
two outings and have not fared
well in."
In the spring season, the
Behrend Lions competed in the
Mercyhurst Invitational, also
known as the Battle of the
Lakes.
Behrend competed against
Division II schools and took
third place with a score of 650.
Gannon was first with 605 fol
lowed by Mercyhurst with 626.
According to junior Rene
Menjivar, the Carnegie Mellon
Invitational was last weekend.
"This [Carnegie Mellon] was
our first match of the spring
season," Bowen said.
"Temperatures were low, in the
high 30s, and it was our first
outing. I think we did okay,
but not as well as I'd like."
Junior Joe Nelson and fresh
man Kevin Koerbel led the
team at Carnegie Mellon with
160 and 164 points respective
ly.
"As for the season so far we
have struggled a little bit,"
Arrigo said. "I think it was
because of the bad weather
and we have not been able to
practice at all in the spring, but
we have been getting better
each tournament."
Behrend competed against

Gannon was first with 605 fol
lowed by Mercyhurst with 626.
According to Arrigo, the
team started both tournaments
a little rough but everyone
improved the second day of
each one.
"In the spring season, I want
to get more experience into the
players," Bowen said. "I try to
get every player in there. It is
a tune up for fall 2009."
The majority of the Blue and
White's season is in the fall.
This year, the Behrend Lions
were AMCC runners-up at the
tournament.
"We did very well," Bowen
said. "We had a hiccup in a
performance and unfortunate
ly we couldn't make the score
up completely."
Along with Bowen, Arrigo
believes that the team was very
successful in the fall season.
"The fall season went great
for us; it was probably our
most successful since I have
been on the team," Arrigo said.
"We took second in AMCC
tournament with my teammate

Bowen is in his third year as
the head men's and women's
golf coach. Before becoming
the head coach, he was the
assistant coach for 16 seasons.
"Coach Bowen has really
helped us a lot," Arrigo said.
"When I first joined the team it
was more just practice when
ever you can or want to. Now
with him we have set sched
ules and definitely get more
practice in. He has also helped
us with knowing that if we play
bad, not to get to worked up
and still have fun."
As a senior, Arrigo hopes to
leave a mark on the golf pro
gram as he moves on.
"I would like to leave a mark
that the golf team has become

more serious and will be a
competitor to win the AMCC
each year," Arrigo explained.
"I think not too many people
know that we have a golf team
and especially a good one, so it
would be nice to let everyone
know we are practicing hard
and working hard to win the
AMCC."
After Arrigo graduates from
Behrend, he plans on staying
in Erie and working part time
in the summer, which will still
leave him one more summer to
play in local golf tournaments.
Then in the fall, Arrigo said
that he plans on finding a full
time job in Erie or somewhere
else.
"I've seen both of them
[Arrigo and Skuse] grow and
improve," Bowen said. "I've
seen them mature as men and
as golfers. They have been an
asset to the team."
