The senators and executive board prepared questions to ask the chancellor prior to his visit to the SGA meeting. Most questions included the future of the campus and the future of the chancellor during his retirement. "It's always great to have the chancellor at the SGA meet ings," said Vice President of SGA and the elected president of for 2009-2010 Brad Behrend student returns from South Korea deployment By Heather McGovern copy editor hamsoB4 psu.edu This past semester, a few of our Behrend students were missing from usual hustle and bustle of the classroom, particularly one. Dan Smith, the Behrend Beacon's photog rapher, was stationed in South Korea for over a month during Spring Break and well into the weeks following Spring Break. "It lets us know where Behrend is headed, shows us the big picture of the college, and lets us know how the SGA can help to make pos itive changes for the campus community." One of the more popular questions directed to the chan cellor was one about Greek housing on-or off-campus. According to Burke, the uni versity won't grant funding for a building for Greeks. Most Sororities and Fraternities have opted to go off-campus, and if the university was going to grant money for Greek housing, the housing would not be on campus. As for the transition for the new chancellor, the national search will start in August. National advertisements will the US Air Force and Pennsylvania Air National Guard, Smith is constantly on standby to miss weeks or months upon end of school. Previous to South Korea, Smith was deployed to Washington D.C. and Texas. In the late fall of 2010, Smith will be deployed to Afghanistan for an extended period of time. Most of the prospective candidates for the office of chancellor will be from nominations and the process should conclude in March. Until the new chancel lor is chosen, the staff at Behrend will be picking up tasks so the campus doesn't fall behind. "We're very plan-oriented here at Penn State so that next person will have a play book," Burke said. "I'd imagine they'd like to put in their own plans as well. The person will probably be appointed far enough in advance that we can plan early." Once the new chancellor is settled, Burke plans on moving back to northern New York in the Thousand Islands where he disclose some of the activities the Air Force participated in while in South Korea, Smith said that his unit aided in the defense of South Korea. North Korea was threatening to attack South Korea, so U.S. troops along with troops from other countries were aiding South Korea. Smith remarked, "Most of the time we were car rying out a mission. Others were training in case the North Koreans attacked." He did get the advantage to learn a few things while over in South Korea. Other questions asked by the SGA senators included adding new majors, more housing, and campus renovations. More housing is in Behrend's five year plan. More University Gate apartments are being built and Tripp Hall is being planned and should be the size of Almy. Additional majors aren't a huge priority .but rhOre fine arts facilities and academ ic renovations are already underway. South Korea, compared to the United States, is not too different Smith says. South Korea contains most of the major clothing and athletic brands, and while they do not have any Wal-Mart or Lowes stores, they do have shops that sell food or other necessities. Smith missed the English language, but admitted that the it is "on the rise [in South Korea]. English is really being taught in schools. Most of the clothes that they wear are all in English and a lot of things like Starbucks are in English." Many of the television stations are in Korean, but the movies are predominantly English with Korean subtitles. Smith missed many other things besides English while over in South Korea. He missed "things that [were] going on with the family like going to the hospital." One of Smith's friends passed away during his absence and his uncle went to the hospital. He missed "things that [were] going on here at Behrend like [in] track and field [with] someone making it to a certain place or stats." Smith even missed "things going on with the newspaper." When asked if he regretted deployment to South Korea, Smith confidently rejected this notion of regret. He gladly vol unteered to represent his coun try.
