The Behrend Beacon I 10 Softball remains unbeaten in AMCC play By Nick Blake sports editor npb5041,,/ psu.edu April 19 was Senior Day for the Behrend Lions softball team, and what a great day it was with a doubleheader sweep of Frostburg State to stay perfect in AMCC play. In game one, the Lions came out of the gates fast and didn't look back. Katie Whitby dou bled in the bottom of the first and Allison Babish followed with a double of her own. Whitby scored on the hit giv ing Behrend a 1-0 lead. Senior Nikki Kaschauer stepped to the plate and wrapped a single to score Babish to increase the lead to two. In the bottom of the third the Lions blew the game open. With the bases loaded, Kimmy Pol ripped a two-out grand slam to give the Blue and White a 6-0 lead. Frostburg would produce a little offense in the top of the fifth inning by scoring a run, making it a 6-1 game. In the bottom half of the inning, the Blue and White would smash any thoughts of a rally from Frostburg State. After scoring two runs to make the lead 8-1, Maddie Wieser bombed a solo home run, extending the lead to eight and ending the game with a final score of 9-1. Senior pitcher Julie Koman earned her eleventh win of the season, pitching five innings Athlete Spotlight: NAME: Elliot Blackstone SPORT: Men's Tennis CLASS: Sophomore DATE: April 24, 2009 Elliot Blackstone has been named the Enterprise RENT-A-CAR and the AMCC men's tennis athlete of the week for the week of April 20, 2009. Blackstone led the Behrend Lions to his second championship in as many years. Blackstone did not lose a set in AMCC play all year and continued his dominance in the conference championship. Blackstone captured the 2009 number one singles champi onship by a 6-3, 6-2 score over the number two seeded Greg Shedd. This is the second conference championship that Blackstone has won. Last year he won the number two singles championship Blackstone teamed up with Jon Henderson (Upper St. Clair/Upper St. Clair) to win the number one doubles. They defeated the number one seeded team from Frostburg 8-3. and tallying seven strikeouts Kaschauer went 3-for-3, scored a run and had an RBI. Pol had two hits in the game and tallied four RBI. "I just try to play consistent ly and go with the flow," Kaschauer said. "I was happy to play that way and con tribute." The Lions had contributions from everyone in game one. "We knew who we were up against, we knew how we had to play and we played at our level." In the second game, the Lions would strike first in the bottom of the second inning. Amy Greene singled early in the inning, then scored on a triple, hit by Laura Frischkorn. In the bottom of the third inning, the Blue and White added another run when Rachelle Lawrence drove in Whitby to take a 2-0 lead. Behrend pitcher Emma Hahn was throwing a no hitter in the sixth inning, but gave up a single to Frostburg's second batter of the inning. Hahn finished the game giv ing up only one hit and striking out six. Whitby was 2-for-3 in the game in the game while scor ing a run, and Frischkorn went 1-for-2 with with an RBI. Game two was much closer, but the Blue and White answered the call. "The second game was a lot closer, but everyone con tributed to get the win." The Behrend Lions will take Elliot Blackstone ENTERPRISE RENT-A-CAR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK SPORTS on Washington and Jefferson finish the week with at home on April 23, and will Franciscan on April 24. Nikki Kaschauer rips a pitch against Frostbrug State Penn State Erie set to welcome back alumni for Spring Alumni Day By Shawn Annarelli contributing' writer smaslB9y, psu.edu On April 25 Penn State Behrend will host "Welcome Back Alumni" for Spring Alumni Day. Behrend's former soccer teams, basketball teams and the volleyball and softball team will take part in the alumni games scheduled. Alumni from the dance and cheerleading squad will also be returning. Certain Behrend teams will be competeing against the alumni, like the soccer teams. Others, such as the basket ball teams, will feature the alumni competing against each other. The competition should be spirited either way. When asked if she was look ing forward to seeing her for mer players returning women's basketball coach, coach Fornari, commented on the fes tivities. "All of them. They all have contributed to my program and I am thankful for that," said Fornari, " I enjoy seeing them and spending time catching up with them and hearing about their families. It's a great day for Behrend Basketball,and I love seeing them back here." The days events will begin at Friday, April 24, 2009 Allison Babish puts her bat on the ball the Behrend fields where the softball alumni game will begin at 10 a.m. This will be followed by the men's and women's soccer alumni games at 12 and 2 p.m. At 4 p.m. attention will shift to the Junker Center when the women's alumni game will take place, as will the dnce and cheerleading squad reunion. The men's basketball alumni game will start at 5 p.m. on the main court, and the volleyball alumni game will start at 5:30 p.m. on court three. From 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. there will be food and drinks avail able in the Junker Center lobby from the Penn State Behrend Alumni Office and the Behrend Athletic Department. This is also a chance to see those that paved the way for our sports teams to be as suc cessful as they are today. "[This is a chance for Behrend students to] recon nect with alumni they may have seen play or knew from the past who have recently graduated," said coach Fornari." "Also see some play ers who have contributed to the successes of some of the best teams in the history of our school. A lot of alumni will be back this weekend in several sports." coNTP BUTED PHOTOS
