Friday, April 17, 2009 Tennis team's nine match win By Shawn Annarelli contributing writer 5ma5189 ,, , psu.edu As an athlete, coach, or just a fan it is always difficult to take a loss. It can be argued that losing time and time again is the most heart breaking, but what about when the team and its fans feel like the wrong team lost. Those are the losses that are the most difficult to take in most cases but, not these Lions. In their final r' lar season CONTRIBUTED PHOTO Sophomore Jon Henderson returns the ball to his opponent. Koerbel and Fyffe named AMCC By Christine Newby sports editor cen5056 ,,, psu.edu Senior pitcher David Koerbel and junior shortstop Josh Fyffe were named the AMCC per formers of the week. Koerbel earned the pitcher of the week honors and Fyffe was named the player of the week. "Holding the all time wins [record] at Behrend definitely means a lot to me," Koerbel said. "There were big name pitchers that I surpassed. But it is more of trying to get back to regionals for me." Koerbel won his 24th win of his career in the first game of the doubleheader against Pitt- Greensburg on Saturday, April 11. He is already the pro gram's leader in strike-outs and complete games. Koerbel currently leads the AMCC in wins with six and strikeouts with 43. "The first two years I just showed up and played," explained Koerbel. "But the last two years I put forth a lot more effort in the offseason Want to play? Head coach Jeff Barger and several players do not appear to be concerned over the defeat. Rather, they are looking ahead to competing in the AMCC Championships on April 19 at the Oxford Club in Wexford, PA. "I'm not concerned. Notre Dame was a very good team," Barger said. "I thought we had our chances, but just didn't get performers of the week and these have been my best two years." Head coach Paul Benim has seen Koerbel grow as a player throughout his career at Behrend. "David has evolved into a complete pitcher," Benim said. "He is a mentally tough kid and he deserves credit for what he has done." As Koerbel was dominating at the plate, Fyffe took over at the plate. Fyffe went 9-for-12 (.750) on the week with four extra-base hits (double, triple, and two HR) and drove in nine runs as the Blue and White swept Franciscan and Pitt- Greensburg. He also con tributed to the team through his base running as he was 3- for-4 on stolen base attempts. Fyffe played solid defense with three assists and three putouts while committing no errors. We had a couple of players playing with injuries and illness and I sat out one starter. For the most part we played hard. We will keep doing what we have been doing, the guys will respond." Senior captain James Getty said, "Fm not really concerned about the loss against Notre Dame, it was a close match that could have gone either way. We just had an off day and it cost us the match. Even though we didn't play as well as we could, it was good warm up for the tournament. [Notre dame] is a pretty good team." The Lions lost 6-3 and it ended a month long undefeat ed streak from March 13 to April 13. Sophomore Elliot Blackstone, who is a favorite to be named AMCC player of the year for the second year in a row, barely lost in the top sin gles and doubles match. He got off to a slow start in his sin gles match losing the first set 6-1 to Notre Dame's Jimmy Goodwin. He came back in the second set to edge out a small victory of 7-6. In the tiebreak er, he lost by the same score he had won. In the top doubles match, he teamed with fellow sophomore Jon Henderson and the pair lost 9-7. "I played very poorly in sin gles and doubles, I made so many errors in the singles match, but it was still pretty close," Blackstone said. "I really feel that I could have won both of those matches. I'm not worried about that match at all. It was played outside in had conditions." Behrend did win the second and third singles matches, as well as, the second doubles match. In the number two sin gles match, sophomore Erkin Nasirli defeated Notre Dame's Andy Sherman. The Lions paired the victorious duo of Getty and Nasirli in the num ber two doubles match. Getty and fellow senior Brian Kaleta are ending their careers when the AMCC Championships are over. Kaleta contributed greatly in his first three years at Behrend before an injury derailed his career last year. He made a return this year, but he has only been able to play sparing ly. "Its kind of bitter sweet," Getty said. "I am definitely excited about playing in the tournament again. I haven't played my best at the tourna ment in previous years, so I am looking forward to getting another chance to play in it. At the same time it will he the last time I will play tennis as a part of a team. I've had so much fun being a part of this team, and I will miss everything about it." The Lions are the favorites to dominate this year's AMCC Championship's as they have gone undefeated against their AMCC rivals this season. Getty is confident the Lions will maintain their superiority in the AMCC Championships. "I really want to win the tournament," Getty said. 'And there is not a doubt in my mind about us winning the tourna ment. I have all the confidence in the world in this team. We have been playing well and we all have been working hard throughout the season, win ning the AMCC Tournament would be a great way for us to end our season.
