As a sophomore at Penn State Behrend I personally don't read our schools newspaper in order to derive my weekly source of gossip about what criminal actions our students have taken over the course of the weekend. Page 4 Matchbox Players liven up Behend What does a rabid dog, a gorilla suit, and left handed scissors all have in common? Well, if you were playing Elevator, in this Tuesday's Improve night, hosted by the Matchbox Players, it would all make perfect sense. The purpose of the Matchbox Players is to "promote the arts on campus," explains Craig Peffer, the group's secretary, and host for the evening. Peffer, lead the night in a wide range of games from the aforementioned Elevator to a game on advice, where one member of the audience would pose a ques tion to a panel of three people. At this time in Bettis's life, he realized that it would take other means to get him to college. Football would be Bettis's answer and ticket to college. "The Bus" began his football career as a freshman in high school, which was a very late start compared to many NFL athletes. Bettis knew nothing about the game, let alone what position he would play. "When I showed up for prac tice the first day, the coaches asked me what position I played," explained Bettis. "I looked at them and said 'What position does it look like I play?— Bettis did not play the run ningback position until his jun ior year. His freshman year, he was a linebacker, while his sophomore year brought a posi tion change placing him at tigh tend and nose guard. Bettis's hard work and deter mination to go to college paid off as he received a scholarship to play at Notre Dame College. According to the Official Website of Jerome "The Bus" Bettis, he averaged 5.7 yards per carry while rushing a total of 337 times for 1,912 yards. During Bettis's speech at the Junker Center he said that he hoped to win two National Championships at Notre Dame. Unfortunately for "The Bus", he did not become a champion in his college career. FTVW I II 2 S3 oach Dave Cooper to retire after ght years at Behrend A journey of 39 years has finally come to an end for one of area's track and field legends: Coach Dave Cooper. A high hool coach for 31 years, and eight years at Penn State Erie, Behrend College, Cooper will retire at the end of this sea m as the driving force behind the track and field and cross )untry programs. As a coach at Union City High School, Cooper led the •oss country program for 28 years, and served six years as the tad coach of the track team. He created the girl's cross coun t program at the high school, and according to the Penn State .hrend website, captured ten conference crowns. He won the State Cross Country Championship title in 1996 and 97, as well as runner-up in 1990, and also took 19 league r es, according to the Penn State Behrend website.
