8 I The Behrend Beacon Women's soccer team victorious over Hilbert r THIS WEEK'S 111 The Behrend Lads' Lions ate the Hilbert Hawks for dinner during the soccer game on Wednesday at the Behrend Fields. The score was a sturdy 2-0 with Behrend ahead during the first half and add five goals to total seven. At the end of the game the score was 7-0, which left the Lions with a spotless victory. The Lions worked well as a team, and at times their passes almost appeared choreographed. "That's kind of our philoso phy," said senior Nikki Frisbee. "Get the ball and play to the white jersey. - she also said that during half time they decided that they needed to come togeth er as a team more than in the first half. This frame of mind earned them five more goals against the Hawks. The cheers coming from teammates of both teams were abundant, from both the side lines and on the field. Hilbert appeared fired up in the beginning. They warmed up with strides and passing exercis es, but when the game began to progress, their confidence was Niagara 33 dominates Behrend intramural flag football k in full swing. If ‘ou were to walk through the hall of the sec ond floor of the Niatiara Dorm, you would most likely hear the sounds of students saving, "oh. we'll go live. - speaking of Halo: or. maybe. "Look what's on HBO!" But lately. much of the talk has been directed toward the Niagara 33 flag football team. The Behrend Lions tepped up their game as it progressed. "We were playing at their level in the beginning and then we played ours at the end," states Frisbee. "They [Hilbert] didn't give up. They were play ing hard throughout the whole game." Freshman Steinsdoerfer scored two goals. Four out of the seven goals scored were by freshmen. Steinsdoerfer says that the new team members arc looking strong. "All freshmen have got ten field time, - she said. Sophomore Caitlyn Elser planted the second goal. She kicked the ball and it appeared almost certain that Hilbert's goalie would block the shot but the ball slipped past her fingers and flew into the net. Frisbee's goal started the sec ond half off with a bang. Joe started the team in hope to make some friends on the Niagara second floor. Not knowing what his team was going to accomplish, Drelick began his quest for a team by going door to door asking the many students if they wanted to join the hall He didn't have much luck. being that most peo ple had their groups of friends who had already signed up for teams However, the last day before the deadline, the remaining students of the Lindsey Senior Nikki Frisbee looks clownfield for a teammate. The field looked like a pinball machine, the ball bouncing off the goalie and back to the Lions, but it wasn't until Frisbee kicked it and the Lions scored. She also added an assist to sen ior Beth Manganaro's goal soon after. "Finally we had enough names on the roster to make a team, - said Drelick The Niagara 33 team was now complete, and began its one day preseason. "What did I get myself into." asked Jason Kurvic, a new member of the team. As the team finished it's first and only practice, they seemed to only accomplish each others names, and began learning who could play where. As the team began to walk together back through their hall, they were stared down by the other kids who had their "stacked teams," and "dynasties." But the Niagara 33 team stayed positive as they went into their first match against a number ten ranked team from last year, Victorious Secret Getting embarassed in the first half, Niagara did n't give up as they switched their formations and began to turn the ball over less and score. With five minutes left in the game, Team Niagara took the lead and held it, to finish the game with their first victory. The team then had another game just days later, in which they faced L2F, a team that was previ ously ranked number six. "Now with a win under the teams belt, they came out faster than ever." said SPORTS Now with a 4-1 record, Niagara 33 looks ahead to their playoff games with much determination and hope of coming out with a manager Kevin Flag Football final goal. On Oct. 25, Behrend is sched uled to go against Penn State Altoona, who according to Frisbee, is ranked first in the AMCC. "Hopefully this [game] will build up for that," said Frisbee Altoona's current standings are 6-0-1 while Behrends is 5-2. According to the 2008 schedule, the game will take place on the Behrend Fields at 1:00 p.m. A strong first half of 22 to 0 in favor of Niagara, lead to a solid second half, finishing the game 50-0 with another Niagara Victory. The team was now 2-0, and moved up to forth in the rankings where they "opened many teams eyes." said Mike DiLuzio. In the second week of the season, team Niagara found themselves in a very tough game against Sig Tau. "This game was a back and forth game," said Jim With ten seconds left on the clock Sig Tau had the ball on Niagara's 30 yard line with fourth down and ten yards to go. Barber They decided to throw the ball deep into the end zone, which was swatted away by the Niagara defense. "My heart was racing as I jumped up with the opposing teams player to knock the ball down for the win," said Barber of team Niagara 33. Niagara 33 finished out their regular season play against The Dream, who won in a very well per- formed game. They then faced Mongolian Beef, a team that decided to drop out late in the season giving Niagara another win to add to their record. Championship HOME SCHEDULE SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25 Behrend's Women's Soccer team (6-9-1) will host Penn State Altoona(l4-0-1) on the Behrend fields at 1:00 p.m. Following the women's game, the Men's Soccer team(lo-6) will face Penn State Altoona's Men's Soccer team(4-8-4) at 3:00 p.m. Behrend's Women's Volleyball team faces Mt. Aloysius The swim team begins their season as they travel to Pitt-Bradford at 3 p.m. The Men's Water Polo team plays at the Division 111 Eastern Championships.
