taken to Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh. They
are being treated for third degree burns cov
ering the majority of their bodies.
In response, the Erie and Penn State com
munity has responded enthusiastically in
raising money to help the family who has
lost everything. Director of Student Affairs
Ken Miller says that Kyle has deferred his
enrollment at Behrend until spring so that
he can be with his family. "We are all trying
to do as much as we can," Miller says.
The Behrend Student Government
Association, with an effort led by President
Erin Kennedy, amongst others, will be plan
ning fundraisers around campus to raise
money for the Milani family. Students
should keep an eye out around Behrend for
donation opportunities.
A ListServ e-mail will be sent out by
Carrick to inform students on a fundraiser
by the Boardwalk Tavern on Sunday, Sept
7. All proceeds from any and all food or
drink at the Tavern purchased between 11
a.m. and 2 a.m. the next morning will be
donated directly to the family. Carrick
hopes that Behrend students will attend the
event to show support to the Milanis as they
face one of the toughest stretches of their
lives.
"They lost everything," Carrick says. "All
of their clothes, pictures, books... it was a
total loss."
Donations are also being taken through
the First National Bank in Erie for those
who may not be able to attend the Tavern
fundraiser this weekend.
Both parents continue to fight for their
lives at Mercy Hospital. Kyle, his sister, and
older brother have been able to travel to
Pittsburgh and back to see their parents.
"We'll be holding his place' for when he
comes back," Miller says. "Until then, we're
just trying our best to be there for him and
his family."

of only nine students to attend the trip. She
spoke to the Erie Times-News about her
experiences in Gulfport.
"The hardest part was really trying to
process everything.” Kozlorowski said in
an interview. "Being in Erie, we're so sepa
rated from the news in the (Gulfport) area.
We think everyone is moving along and
everything is fine. But people are still strug
gling with finances, with rebuilding, with
relocating."
For Berger, he realizes that there is still a
huge need in the area. Compounded by
Hurricane Gustav, perhaps the need is now
greater than it ever has been. One thing,
over the years, remains the same to the staff
and faculty who gave gone and those who
will go this year.
"It's been a defining experience in my
life.” says Berger. "I'm sure that others that
have traveled with us the last two years
would agree."

that no one had told the residents what to do
or where to go if something had happened
in the hall. "I think it was kind of dangerous
not to email us. to [tell us] if something had
happened to go to another building.”
RAs from other suite buildings completed
the rounds through Porcupine Hall in addi
tion to their own buildings. “The RAs there
did the best they could," says Edwards.
Both Helbling and Edwards said that while
a new RA has been instated in their building
in the past couple of days, they had not met
or spoken to them.
While it is unknown if any more RAs have
been fired in the past week, vacant positions
are starting to fill up as residents notice new
people moving into the suddenly emptied
RA rooms. As of the time of publication,
Residence Life was still conducting inter
views of students on the RA waitlist for
unfulfilled positions.

Two Penn State Behrend professors published their
first book together. The Daily Art of Management: A
Hands-On Guide to effective Leadership and
Communication, in April to provide a handbook for
active managers. In a recent press release Jim
Fairbank said. “Our book is aimed at helping them do
just that though clear, concise and concrete guidance,
specific day-to-day scenarios, and real-world exam
ples."
Peg Thoms approached Jim Fairbank in the fall of
2006 about being a part of this project. The next 19
months were dedicated to writing and editing. The
book was never meant to be a textbook but a go-to
source for practicing managers. "We wanted to
ground it in the real world; ‘you can do this', this isn’t
mystical.” But despite the initial purpose for the
book. Peg Thoms is using it as the required text for
her class. “It is written much more conversationally
then most text material", said Jim Fairbank.

book, provides a way for readers to develop and com
municate a vision for a small work department or an
entire organization, a social club or a children’s sports
league, or a church or a regional professional associ
ation. The following chapters teach how to write
organizational, departmental and individual goals;
create an ethical work environment; recruit and hire
the right people; communicate effectively in various
types of situations; and understand what motivates
employees.
The eighth chapter in The Daily Art of
Management: A Hands-On Guide to effective
Leadership and Communication is an overview of
organizational change. Chapter nine help managers
by offering a thorough summary of how to under
stand and deal with competition. Chapter 10 focuses
on the development of positive public relations. The
last two chapters of the book talk about the value of
being a solid citizen on both the personal and profes
sional level and, finally, encourages readers to utilize
all of there strategies while creating more effective
teams within a department or organization.
