Senior Emily Rogan decided to ploy for the team after encouragement from roommate and friend Danielle Demay. Despite the fact that Rogan has never play eel lacrosse competitively prior to this year, she says she decided to join the team for "fun and to stay in shape.” Much like the Behrend hockey team, the women have to come up with iheir own funding for equipment, food and means of iraveling to the away games. When asked where they get the luoiiev to pa\ for the necessities of the season, sophomore Sasha \ 1. 11 tine/ said "lots and lots of fundraising.” Each player also must pay >4O at the beginning of the season. The long-term plan foi the team is to eventually became a varsity sport, however, the rules for Division 111 NCAA lacrosse are "complicated.” according to senior captain Danielle Demay. They traveled to Florida and My rtle Beach during the w eek of March 9 to open up then outdoor spring season. They began their training in I lorida for a lew days, then traveled north to Coastal Carolina to , ompete in the schools annual invitational. "It was an awesome time, s.ad sophomore runner Kevin Gorny. "The weather was uullv nice and the training went reallv well." lb th the men and women got off to a strong start with a hand 1u 1 o| runners already qualifying for EC AC Championship in Slav, as well as selling a few new school records. Standout runners for the men were Kevin Gorny.- who broke In. own school record and qualified for the ECAC Championship in the steeplechase event, which is an event where runners must clear hurdles and water jumps. Mike I ci taro and Doug Stevenson tied in the 100 m with a record-set ting nine of 11.10 seconds. Ferraro also had a notable perform ance in the 200 m. A new record was set in the high jump event. I he new height was set by freshman Bryson Hartzler at 6-4 3/4 inches putting him in No. 6 for the competition. I-it the women. The women’s schedule is short with seven games and only one of them will be played at home. Their next game is Friday, March 28 when they travel to Grove City to take on the Wolverines, followed by a match at Carnegie Mellon on Saturday, April 5. Their one and only home game will be played on Monday, April 7 against Slippery Rock University. The team is part of the Women’s Collegiate Lacrosse League (WCLL). The WCLL is a club sports league of 39 teams cover ing areas of the eastern United States from New York to lowa and is the largest lacrosse club league in the nation. The league is entering its fourteenth season this year. The Behrend women’s lacrosse team began in the 2005-2006 school year by Behrend graduate Heidi Brackbill. Andrew helped the Behrend Lions to a 6- 2 record over spring break competition in Port St. Lucie, Florida, winning in two starts against Ursinus college and Mt. St. Vincent. Chrobak beat Ursinus by pitching six innings with five strike outs and three walks, while scattering five hits. In His second outing of the week, he pitched eight innings allowing one unearned run, no walks and struck out 11 in the victory over Mt. St. Vincent. “Andy made two quality starts for us in Florida,” said head coach Paul Benim. "He is an integral part of our program's success and will be relied upon to contin- uing doing his thing all spring."
