BEACON SPORTS ENTERPRISE RENT-A-CAR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK NAME: SPORT: CLASS: DATE: State Behrend basketball senior Penn Doug Straub (St. Catholic) has been PRISE RENT-A-CAR Athlete of the Week for the week of Feb. 25, 2008. Straub came up big against AMCC rival Lake Erie College on Wednesday, Feb. 20 in the Junker Center, making his mark with some key sharpshooting in the second half against the Storm. Straub hit three huge 3- point shots in the final minutes of the game to help the blue and white edge the Storm 70-65. With their win last Saturday over Pitt-Bradford, the Behrend Lions improved to 21-4 overall and 15-3 in the AMCC. The men will host the AMCC Tournament beginning on Friday, Feb. 29. Behrend Lions have taken the number one spot in the AMCC and will take on No. 4 Penn State Altoona at 6:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m. No. 2 Lake Erie College will square off against No. 6 Medaille College. The winner of each will face off in the championship game on Saturday, March 1 at 3 p.m. The winner of the AMCC Tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division 111 Tournament. Doug Straub Men’s Basketball Senior Feb. 29, 2008 Mary’s/Elk County named the ENTER- Men’s hoops look to extend winning streak By: Jessica Carlson sports editor jlcsolB@psu.cdu It will be the battle of the branch cam pus on Saturday, Feb. 29. as the Penn State Behrend men's basketball team will go against Penn State Altoona for the semifinals of the AMCC playoff tourna ment. Behrend, who sits atop of the AMCC Conference, will host No. 4 seed Altoona. Behrend has been on an eight-game winning streak and goes into the game with an overall record of 15-3 and an AMCC record of 21 -4. Last Wednesday, Feb. 20. the men scored a big win over the Lake Erie Storm by a score of 70-65. The Storm is ranked No. 2 in the Conference and will take on No. 6 Medaille College following the Behrend/Altoona game. On Saturday, Feb. 23, they continued to improve their record after defeating Pitt- Bradford by a score of 69-54. The men have had a strong season as a result of some solid performances by a handful of players from the roster. Senior Kevin Buczynski was named the AMCC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week as well as the Division 111 ECAC Co-player of the Week during the week of Feb. 18. Buczynski is currently second in the all time scoring list, trailing James Curren’s, who played for Behrend from 2000-2004, with 1,726 total career points. This will be Behrend's third time play ing Altoona this season. The first time the teams matched up in the 2007-2008 season was on Saturday, Jan. 12 in the Junker Center gym. Behrend took the win by a score of 77-61. Buczynski lead the Behrend Lions by racking up 20 points, six rebounds and five assists for the game. Justin Kovac added 15 points to the score, as well as four assists. Drew Seeker also made it into the double digits for the Lions scoring 12 points. The second time the Penn State teams went head to head was on Saturday, Feb. 9 when Behrend once again brought home a victory with a score of 69-40. Kovac had another stellar performance, racking in another 15 points for the Blue and White. Winners of both games on Friday will compete for the AMCC Championship on Saturday, March I at 3 p.m. in the Junker Center.
