The most hated team in baseball is not in New York
By Andrew McLachlan

As the MLB playoffs begin this week, I sit and
ponder the two teams that are playing. You have the
Colorado Rockies, the unknown underdogs who
have taken their unbelievable winning streak to the
playoffs and all the way to the World Series. Then,
you have the Boston Red
Sox, who are going to their
second World Series in
three years. Thinking into
the series a little deeply, I
have come to this conclu
sion. If the Red Sox win,
they are the new "Yankees"
of the baseball world
Everybody knows the
New York Yankees for
being the arrogant team
from the Bronx that flaunts
their money by purchasing
big name talent and putting
together all-star type team's
year in and year out. Many
baseball fans over the years
have come to hate the
Yankees for those reasons
and for their hot-tempered Red Sox David Ortiz
owner George
Steinbrenner. With high profile players like Alex
"A
-Rod" Rodriguez, Andy Pettitte, Bobby Abreu,
Mariano Rivera, and Roger Clemens possibly leav
ing the team during the off-season and with manag
er Joe Torre not returning to the team, it looks like
the Yankees will have a much different and younger
look next year.
With the Yankees not having the dominant talent,
there has to be a team in Major League Baseball to
hate and all fingers are pointing to the Boston Red
Sox. If they beat the Rockies in the World Series,
that will make two titles in three years, which is the
starting point for a dynasty. I remember growing up
and absolutely hating the Atlanta Braves for their
win over the Pirates in the '92 NLCS (thanks,
Bonds, for your noodle arm) and for their domi
nance during the 90s. Now that they are basically a
middle of the pack type team, my hatred has
stopped.
The Red Sox have all the ingredients for the next

Browns' eyes are not on NFL draft anymore
By Andrew McLachlan

As one team thinks about going over .500, the
other team looks to grab its first win of the season.
This Sunday, the Cleveland Browns will travel to
Edward Jones Stadium to take on the winless St.
Louis Rams.
The Browns are coming off their bye week, with
a record of 3-3. Their last game, which was a 41-
31 win against the Miami Dolphins, put the Browns
at .500 on the season, which has surprised many
people around the league and has made playing for
the Browns a lot more exciting. "It's a lot of fun to
come to work," says wide-receiver Braylon
Edwards. "That's not lying, before it wasn't fun.
Guys didn't really want to be here. It was like, 'Let's
just get practice over with and go home' ... Things
are fun right now. It's just a whole different atmos
phere."
Even though the Browns are feeling good about
The Behrend Beacon I
team to hate in Major League Baseball. For one,
they have tons of talent on their depth chart. Alt
their veteran bats can tear the cover off the ball, the
younger players are some of the best in the majors,
and their pitching is probably the best in baseball.
They also have the big name talent that can rival the
Yankees, with Curt Schilling, David Ortiz, Manny
Ramirez, J.D. Drew, and Josh Beckett.
Also, the Red Sox are obviously not afraid to use
the wallet to get the play
ers they need. This year,
they were second in pay
roll with $143,123,714,
only trailing the Yankees.
With young guns like
Jonathan Papelbon,
Kevin Youkillis, and
Dustin Pedroia getting
massive pay raises in the
near future, you better
believe that those num
bers will increase. They
also have their Japanese
import in pitcher Daisuke
Matsuzaka, who the Red
Sox paid 50 million dol
lars just to talk to him to
work on a deal.
The last ingredient
that the Red Sox have to
be the next hated team is
their fans. I have seen some real annoying fans
before, but Red Sox fans are some of the worst in
the world. The chowder-eating fans of Boston not
only come off as "jerks," but they do it in a way that
makes it dangerous when Boston comes into town
on nickel beer and mini wooden bat night at the ball
field.
I know the Red Sox have become a fan favorite
for most baseball fans throughout the country. Their
first perception was the team that was going to try to
keep the mighty Yankees from winning another title
and people cheered for them. Now, times are
changing and there are other teams keeping the
Yankees out. The Red Sox are the mighty team.
They are the powerhouse that we are looking for
other teams to beat. If they lose to the Rockies, then
it changes everything, but the odds are not in favor
of the Rockies. With the Patriots and the Red Sox,
Boston is turning into the "new" New York and I see
this lasting awhile. Sorry Boston, but we hate you.
their team, they will not take the 0-7 Rams lightly.
The Rams had high hopes on the 2007 season after
going 8-8 last season. Injuries have plagued the
Rams, losing quarterback Marc Bulger and running
back Steven Jackson to lengthy injuries early in the
season. With Bulger getting back into a groove and
Jackson returning this week, the Rams' offense
should be much improved against the Browns.
"Any play Steven (Jackson) touches the ball, we
can take it all the way and I think that's something
we've been missing," Bulger said.
Even with Jackson in the lineup, the Rams will
still have to worry about the surprisingly powerful
offense of the Cleveland Browns. Led by second
year quarterback Derek Anderson, the Browns
offense has been averaging 28 points per game,
which is the same average the Rams defense has
been giving up each game. The Rams will have to
rely on veteran leadership on defense to try to keep
the Browns' offense off the field.
The game time is 1 p.m. and will be televised on
CBS.
