BEACON SPORTS ENTERPRISE RENT.A.CAR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK NAME: Jerry Tortella, SPORT: Men's Soccer Sophomore CLASS: Oct. 22, 2007 DATE: Jerry Tortella (Pittsburgh/Thomas Jefferson) has been named the ENTERPRISE RENT-A-CAR athlete of the week for the week of Oct. 22, 2007. Tortella has tallied five goals in the last three games. Over the weekend, Tortella scored his 16th goal of the season, tying the all time season goals record set back in 1973. Earlier in the week, Tortella scored two goals in a 5-0 win over Hilbert College. He has also been named the AMCC player of the week earlier this season. The Behrend men's team (11-4-2) is currently in second place in the AMCC standings, with a record of 7-2 in the conference. The men's post-season fate rests on results of Tuesday's final day of regular season conference play. Steelers lose heartbreaker to Broncos Jess Carlson staff writer jlcsolB@psu.edu Blame it on the cold weather; blame it on the loss of Aaron Smith in the first half, or the high altitude of Invesco Field; blame it on all the hype about this being an easy win for the Pittsburgh Steelers (4-2). Regardless of the countless excus es, the Steelers came out against the Denver Broncos playing with less emotion than Ben Stein, resulting in a loss to the .500 Broncos (3- 3) with a score of 31-28 Despite the fact that QB Ben Roethlisberger threw three intercep tions in the first half last week, Big Ben stepped up in the second half, com- pleting 13-of-14 passes, bringing his team out of a 14- point deficit, tying the game in the last few minutes of the fourth quarter. The game came down to the last few seconds when, after a late Steelers touch- down to tie the game, the Broncos responded by driv ing down the field to put themselves in field goal range with two seconds left in the game. Expect Pressure on the QB, or a lack thereof, made Jay Cutler look like a pro bowl player, completing 22 -of-29 passes with a total of 248 yards, three of which were touchdown passes, and only two were intercepted. He also converted seven of 10 third down conversion attempts. If Cutler can do that much damage to the for merly number one ranked defense in the NFL, how much more can an experienced QB like Carson Palmer execute; despite the fact that Palmer is leading the AFC with nine interceptions thus far? The Steelers will take on the Cincinnati Bengals at Paul Brown Stadium on Sunday. My suggestion for the Steelers; take the bus to Cincinnati. Their only two losses this season came after flying to Arizona and Denver. They are 3-0 at home and 1- 0 when they took the bus to their season opener at Cleveland. However, they can't rely on supersti tion to grant them a win on Sunday. The Bengals will be coming into the game off of a big comeback win over the New York Jets last week, ending their four game losing streak. Trailing 23-10 in the third quarter, they came back game. Throughout the last few years it has been a tough battle between the division competitors. Bitterness was formed CONTRIBUTED PHOTO when former Steeler there to be a physical battle all over the field. There may not be any mocking 'Who Dey' chants from Bill Cowher, or any taunting from the cocky ex-linebacker Joey Porter this season, but to make up for last week's loss, Steelers fans hope their team will come out showing a strong desire to win. Pittsburgh has won the last six games, and 17 of 20 total at Cincinnati. Kickoff is set for 1 pm and will air regionally on CBS. Volleyball with a Matthew Yandrick contributing writer injysols@psicedu There is a club team with a "varsity" image at Penn State Behrend, the men's volleyball team. They are coming off a suc cessful season in which the team finished second to Pitt Oakland in the Penn-Ohio Volleyball League (POVL) playoffs. As a mem ber of the POVL, they compete in the North Division of the League which includes Mercyhurst, Case Western Reserve, John Carroll, Gannon, and Allegheny. Though the season doesn't officially start until the spring, action has already gotten underway. Recently the team participat ed in a tournament hosted by Clarion University. After qualify ing for the playoffs, Behrend placed second, losing to champion lUP 24-26 in the finals. "I am disappointed knowing we came so close to winning," says junior Patrick Walling, club president and coach, "but we played well all day, so we just need to build upon that." The expectations are high this year. Finishing third and second the past two years, Behrend looks to finally capture first place in the league. "Our goals are to beat Pitt and be number one in our league," states Walling. With most of the starters returning, as well as the talented freshmen this year, Behrend will be on the hunt for another suc cessful season. Last season the Lions finished with an overall record of 5-3 in the North Division of the POVL. Their record was strong enough to earn them second place in the division. "This year the load will be carried by our captains, senior out side hitters Kyle Smith, David Henning and junior middle-hitter Joe Crowe." The team practices in Erie Hall from 9-11 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. With their recent success, they have received tournament invi tations to Grove City, lUP, West Virginia University, Pitt Johnstown and the prestigious Buckeye Invitational at Ohio State Do You Have a Love for Sports? A win for Cincinnati (2- 4) on Sunday would move them within one game short of first place in the AFC North, currently lead by the Steelers. A loss would keep them at the bottom of the division. It would also cause the Steelers to be tied for first place with the Baltimore Ravens (4-3), who do not play this week. Basically, it's a big win for both teams. There may even be hopes of varsity status. According to Walling, this could happen if Behrend is able to acquire the appropriate funding for a coach and transportation. Unfortunately, like many other teams on Behrend's campus who currently carry the club title and finding the proper funding proves to be a somewhat difficult task. Often times it is estimat ed that a club team would need somewhere in the range of a hun dred thousand dollars to substantiate varsity status. While the cost may not be quite this steep for the volleyball club, price remains a significant concern for the club. Despite the team's current struggles to officially make the leap to varsity status, the future still remains bright for Behrend's club volleyball team. For the past two decades, it has become a wel come and attractive addition to Penn State-Brehrend Athletics and with top finishes in their division and high hopes for this sea son, the team looks to continue their success.
