Behrend hockey has tools to be contender in 'OB

After a big win against Allegheny, the Penn State
Behrend Ice Hockey Team will look to continue
their winning streak this weekend against two tough
opponents. On Friday, the team travels to
Pittsburgh to take on Carnegie Mellon and comes
home for their home opener against Community
College of Allegheny College.
The team roster is comprised of a number of
erclassmen, as
well as a few
younger members.
Seniors include
goalie Pat Laskey,
forwards Dan
Thiessen, Brad
Alayon, Brysten
Jones, DJ Craven,
Andy McLachlan
,and defender Josh
Grumski. Forward
Brian Hammel and
center Justin
Duchini are the two
juniors on the team.
The sophomore
class makes up a
third of the roster,
consisting of
wards Kevin Geibel,
Chris Siminac, Matt
Laskey, Eric Fry,
Brian Learn, goalie
Eric Thiessen and defender Aaron Marks
The club is a part of two different leagues the
College Hockey East (CHE), and the American
College Hockey Association (ACHA). The CHE
expanded this year to cover teams from Fredonia,
NY to West Virginia University, however most of
the teams are from the Pittsburgh area. The ACHA
is a national league with approximately 100 teams
participating all over the country. Because of the
large number of teams this year, ACHA changed
their playoff format so that the top 10 teams from
all four divisions will participate in the playoffs.
The Behrend Hockey Club has been around for
six years and was awarded by both the school and
league for being the most organized club last year.
Because it is a club and not a varsity sport the play
ers have to fund everything themselves which
includes things like equipment (skates, pads, sticks)
as well as paying for time on a rink which usually

Ex-Steelers look to upset former team
By Andrew McLachlan

Off to the best start since 1993, the Pittsburgh
Steelers have looked at times unstoppable on the
field. Led by their high-powered offense and their
rock solid defense, the Steelers have set their sights
to have the best start in franchise history, but look
ing to stop their winning streak is a dangerous team
from Arizona, in an effort to turn their season
around.
The Arizona Cardinals, who are coached by for
mer Steelers offensive coordinator Ken
Whisenhunt, are trying to get back to .500 with a
win against the Steelers. Cardinals starting QB
Matt Leinart has been in the news lately, after
being replaced last game by backup QB Kurt
Warner. After only playing two series, the
Cardinals put Warner in to try to stop the bleeding.
Being down 23-6 in the fourth quarter to
Baltimore, Warner led the Cards back and lost to a
respectable 26-23.
Whisenhunt said Monday that Leinart is still his
starter, but that Warner also will see playing time.
"We're going to try to find ways to keep Kurt play-

The Behrend Beacon I
runs around $lOO/hour. Senior and Vice President
of the club, Brysten Jones says, "We have certainly
tried asking to become a varsity sport here at
Behrend. The main problem...is money. In talking
to the athletic directors about how much it would
cost to properly run a hockey team as a varsity sport
on campus, they started running estimates and
stopped at $lOO,OOO a year, not including a decent
rink for us to play on, which would be a few million
dollars more."
In order to keep organized the team has a board

skates. Skates
can range in price from $3OO - $5OO. Because of the
high price of equipment, transportation and ice
time, players are expected to pay another $BOO in
dues each season.
The price is actually down from past years.
Because the hockey team has become a strong club
on campus they have received a lot of funding from
SGA and SAF. "When I was a freshman, our dues
were $1200," says Jones. Dues are also down this
year because the club was able to start a second
team, and with more players the money is spread
out more.
PSB Hockey is head coached by Gio Duchini,
and assisted by Aric Kopf, Daren Douglas, and
Steven Hogan

ing based on how he played Sunday," he said. "But
I don't feel like Matt has done anything to lose the
job." This is a big game for Whisenhunt, not only
to get his team back on track, but also to beat the
team that turned him down for the head coach job
in Pittsburgh.
The Steelers have a lot on their minds after such
a good start to the season. Not only are they look
ing to go 4-0 for the first time since 1979, but also
are attempting to beat another quality opponent for
a second week in a row. Last week, the Steelers
faced their true first test in the 2-0 San Francisco
49ers. After starting off slow, the Steelers took
control in the second half and came out with a
commanding 37-16 win.
Even though the Steelers are favored to win
against Arizona, they will have to win without for
mer all-pro WR Hines Ward. Ward is listed as
doubtful with a sprained knee. Pittsburgh Head
Coach Mike Tomlin said that he is not sure if Ward
will play or not. "I have learned not to count a guy
like Hines Ward out," Tomlin said. "That's why I'm
saying it's being characterized as doubtful. We'll
take it day to day and see where he is."
The game will kick off at 4:15 p.m. in University
of Phoenix stadium in Glendale, Ariz.
