2 I The Behrend Beacon Weather worsens for lost mountain climbers COOPER SPUR, Oregon: A group of three climbers remain lost as intensifying winter storms continue to drive back rescue efforts. One climber, Kelly James, is thought to be near the eleven thousand foot summit of Mount Hood. while companions Brian Hall and Jerry Cooke may have descended a few hundred feet in search of help. Rescue workers have set up a base camp around six thousand feet in an attempt to make repeated efforts easier. These are three of the most phenomenal men you could ever meet. They're smart, they are strong. and they care so deeply for one another," said Karen James, wife of one of the climbers. Rescuers received a new sign of life Thursday when telephone company T-Mobile reported that James' cell phone, which had previously been turned off, had been turned back on and was return ing "ping" signals. "My heart was in my throat when I heard that, because if it's true it means Kelly is alive, and he has his wits about him," said James' brother, Frank. However, a new wave of winter storms are again approaching the Oregon coast, bringing with them winds expected to gust up to one hundred miles per hour. The rapidly increasing winds have forced even unmanned search drones to be grounded and further attempts at rescue have been aborted. Continued from page I Avid hunters and fishermen with years of experience wouldn't be the only members. Both male and female students who have a desire to learn about the sports could also participate. Junior Finance major Tim Campbell goes fishing but has never hunted. Campbell said that he would definitely join a hunting club because it would introduce him to the sport. The other advantage that a hunting and fishing club would have is a group knowledge of the area, which would ultimately build over time. Sophomore Plastics Engineering major Andrew Koleck fishes often in the summer at home, but is unfamiliar with the Erie area. In regards to starting a fishing and hunting club, Koleck said, "I don't know of any good places in Erie for fishing. A club would be a good way to find some. It would also be a good way to learn about differ ent techniques. I would love to join." A group of young men who are involved in a very similar group is the Tau Phi Delta fraternity at University Park. This chapter has been collecting techniques and strategies concerning fishing and hunting for 84. years. The Deli's mission is to preserve the interests of hunt ing, fishing and the outdoors in a group of young people where the interest is drastically declining everyday. Each year during trout sea son, the brothers spend a weekend camping and fishing at their frater nity's mountain camp. The fraternity also takes fishing trips to the Little Juniata River and Lake Raystown, in addition to Spring Creek, which is the finest wild trout stream in Pennsylvania. However, the possibilities of fishing hot spots are equally, if not more so, abundant around our area. Lake Erie, Walnut Creek, Lake Arthur, Conneaut Lake, and Pymatuning Lake are all well-known angling areas within an hour drive of Behrend. If you are interested in starting a club at Behrend, contact SGA Financial Supervisor Lynn Oborski and pick up a form. A minimum of five people must have an interest in begin ning the club and a "template of constitution” must be written and submitted to SGA for approval. If the club's constitution meets the standards of SGA's Senators and Constitution Committee, a club can be formed in as little as three weeks. Restrictions and regulations regarding the clubs activities and actions are up to the Office of Student Activities. If you are a student that shares a similar interest with others, don't hesitate to start an organization. "It's a simple and straight forward procedure here," said Oborski. Whether it's a hobby, a passion, or even something new you would like to try, a club is a great way to draw the attention and company of those who share your same passion. If you are interested in finding Pennsylvania Boating and Game Commissions, both of which offer intern ships. Since a degree in Wildlife Studies isn't available at Behrend, a club could give students the opportunity to estab lish connections with specific environmental groups Senior Management major Mark Lukasko not only hunts and fishes, but loves the outdoors enough to tie it into his future career. "A management posi tion with the Pennsylvania Game Commission would be great for me," said Lukasco. The combined forces of several revolutionary groups have finally surrounded one of the few remaining government strongholds, the city of Baidoa. Muslim soldiers, some in their teens, now patrol the borders of the city brandishing AK-475, the most common weapon in the long-running standoff. "Morale is very high and we are ready to fight," the government's military commander, Maj. Gen. Ismail Naji, said near the front lines. "The clock is ticking toward war." Meanwhile, neighboring countries of Eritrea and Ethiopia are backing opposite sides in the war and are sending massive amounts of weapons over their borders to government and revolutionary forces. Government officials claim that peace is still hoped for, but representatives from both sides claim that war is now inevitable. The United Nations Security Council passed a resolution last week to send peacekeeping troops to the region, as well as lifting an embargo on arms in order to allow the defensive training of government forces before the war explodes into unrestrained vio lence. "When this battle starts, it will be a fight to the finish," General Mohamed Warsame said. The country, already suffering from widespread famine and disease, has a current average lifespan of under 50 years. Source: CNN.com, Yahoo!
