BEACON SPORTS Behrend lions start season strong as tournament champs Mike Sharkey /THE BEHREND BEACON HOUSING AND FOOD SERVICES ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Great Start For Behrend Hockey By Danielle Brown staff writer The Penn State Behrend hockey team kicked off it’s season with a tournament win at the Igloo Ice Arena. To start off the 2006-2007 Club Ice Hockey season, the Lions won all four of their games, mak ing them the champions of the first annual second Harvest Food Drive tournament. The tournament trophy will soon be displayed inside the Junker Center for all of Behrend to see. Penn State crushed Edinboro is the first game with a score of 9-1 . Forward Josh Grumski scored two goals, with other players scoring one. Pat Laskey in goal held Edinboro to a single point. The team had the night to rest before playing Alfred on Saturday morning. Once again, Penn State dominated the game, winning by a score of 9- 1. Sean Bartlett scored a hat trick, and Brad Alayon had two goals for the Lions. The third game of the tournament played Saturday night, was against Fredonia. This game was much closer than the first two, with a score of 4-3. Behrend pulled off this victory with D.J. The Lions had to play Fredonia again, their toughest opponent from the tournament. The game started out with the teams neck-and-neck, finishing the first period with a score of 1-1. In the second period, Fredonia took the lead scoring two goals, holding Behrend to none. The Lions were down 3-1 going into the third and final period of the game. In the last period, Forward Brian Hammel scored the tieing and winning goals, making Behrend the tour nament champions. Goalie Pat Laskey has a 2.00 goals against aver age in the tournament. The high scorers for Penn State were Brian Hammel with five goals and Brad Alayan with four. The Behrend Club Hockey team, last years North Division champions, have started their season off strong. The boys say they hope to be just as success ful this year and are looking forward to the season The team is back in action on Sunday. October 8. The team plays Allegheny at 6:15 p.m. at the Igloo Ice Arena.
