The new policy enforces a 50-game suspension on viola tors for the first offense, a 100-game suspension for the second offense, and a lifetime ban from the NEW OFF-CAMPUS STUDENT LIVING COMMUNITY Construction Begins this Fall! The policy also includes tests for ampheta mines, hut the proposal might fail despite approval from baseball team owners. The players' union, which has gotten away with murder in years past, must approve the policy. Despite the advent of a tightening of the reins on steroids, this will not magically happen. Like any policy, implementation will not occur overnight. Everyone is going to have their mixed opinions on the controversy. What would be help ful is if the players' union and the Senate followed the proverbial communications adage: "agreeing FOPT r I ~) Men's Basketball November 19 Behrend Tournament TBA November 20 Behrend Tournament TBA November 29 Westminster 7:30 PM December 2 @ Pitt-Greensburg 8:00 PM December 3 @ Frostburg 6:00 PM December 10 @ Fredonia 8:00 PM December 18 @ Cal Tech Tournament TBA December 19 @ Cal Tech Tournament TBA January 3 Allegheny 7:30 PM January 6 Penn State Altoona 8:00 PM January 7 Mt. Only then will a compromise evolve. Time will tell whether or not the dream of non-performance enhanced baseball will become a reality. Should other sports try a steroids policy too? Absolutely. Athletes in all sports use steroids of some sort, no matter what they say. Steroid usage is part of the job. There is so much competition in the professional sports world that some athletes get so obsessed with the physical prowess of their bodies and sell themselves the idea that steroids are a necessity, no matter what the consequences. Yes and no. Players obviously have talent if they can hit a baseball over a fence in a major league baseball game, otherwise they would have never been drafted in the first place. However, at the same time, one has to question how long the player has been using steroids. One will never know unless the player openly admits it, and how many play ers will do that? Slim to none. Like any contro versial sports topic, it is always 50/50. Steroids policy is no different. Hopefully, the strength of baseball's top dogs wins out over the strength of anabolics.
