SGA presidential hopefuls
Candidates for SGA president will officially announce
their platforms Monday. This year's hopefuls are Justin
Curry, Psy 08, Alexander Henderson, Poli Sci and Econ 06
and Zack Mentz, Soft Eng 06.
Curry is now vice president of SGA, orientation director
and overall member of the concert committee. He was also
involved in SGA at Penn State Dußois before transferring to
Behrend.
Henderson now serves as member of Lion Ambassadors,
Omicron Delta Kappa and chair pro-tempore of SGA. He has
spent all three years of his undergraduate career at Behrend
and in SGA.
Mentz is currently president of Lawrence Hall Council and
SGA senator. He has also spearheaded Poetic Visions and the
tutoring club at Penn State Mont Alto, where he completed
his first two years of study.
Henderson believes that the SGA president should be
knowledgeable about the system of which he or she will be
in charge. Henderson was on the committee that set up the
current system during his freshman year and plans to imple
ment parts of that structure that he feels have been over
looked.
Mentz feels that members of SGA should have experience
in both SGA and other clubs. This would assist those mem
bers in being both representatives and leaders at the same
time and therefore eliminate "what some people may see as
red tape."
Curry feels that an SGA president should be accessible and
down to earth. The ability to go out and talk to people, make
friends in class and with people who aren't involved in clubs
on campus is a primary trait that Curry believes is beneficial
to someone in such a position.
The main objective for Mentz is to allow students to see
where their money is going by adding more student services
and again limiting the "red tape" feel.
"Although it's my first year at Behrend, I've had just as
many years at Penn State as any other candidate." said
Mentz. "I've come to learn that real experience isn't limited
to a single campus."
Henderson wants to make sure that SGA is truly represen
tative of the student body. To achieve this objective, he feels
that the council system that is now in place must be reconfig
ured to inject more academic diversity.
"I think that being impartial is very important, however I
think that if you believe in something, you have to be willing
to stand up for it," said Henderson. "I think impartiality and
open-mindedness are both important qualities [for a presi
dent] as well as standing up for what you believe in."
Curry would like to increase the number of senators in
SGA by adding more students which he feels is long overdue
because of the rapid increase in Behrend's student popula
tion.
"I've always liked to see things happen," said Curry. "I've
always liked to give my opinion and go in there and say 'why
do can't we to do it this way' and 'why do we have to do it
that way' and push the bar."

Even if he has his mind made up about something, Curry
wants someone to step up and challenge him.
Henderson has had experience since his first semester in
both SGA and other clubs. This makes him feel qualified to
he a good leader since he has experience in how the systems
work.
Mentz says people have already begun to recognize him as
a student leader and felt comfortable addressing concerns to
him in his short time at Behrend.
