Stasiewski editor in chief Erie had its own Democratic conven tion on Oct. 1 and the keynote speaker was Sen. John Edwards. The vice-presi dential candidate spoke to a fervent crowd of area residents, assuring them that “help is on the way.” “The family you’re bom into and the color of your skin do not determine your destiny,” said Edwards. Edwards told the crowd that it was time for a change, and that sentiment is exactly what the president of the Behrend College Democrats liked about the rally. Ben Haire, POLSC 04, said that he and everyone at the rally loved the idea that “we are not going to have more of the same.” lie dance program at present ELECTION 2004 “I was incredibly inspired,” said Haire. “John Edwards was one of the best live public speakers I’ve ever seen.” Treasurer of the College Democrats Chris Hvizdak, COMB A 09, was also en thralled and inspired by Edwards’s speech. “He’s an incredibly engaging public speaker,” said Hvizdak. “He’s a dy namic, progressive person who is ca pable of putting the country on a new track.” The Behrend College Democrats were out in force volunteering for the event and club treasurer Chris Hvizdak was eager to help. Hvizdak believes that the vice-presidential candidate has the cha risma to attract young voters like him. Hvizdak was also in attendance at the Edward send-off rally at the Erie airport, Monday. Originally scheduled to be an event for the volunteers at the Oct. 1 rally, the airport celebration was opened to the public. That didn’t seem to matter for Hvizdak. He got to see a side of Edwards that wasn’t seen at the first, very public rally. “He did not speak on Monday, but he Friday, October 8,2004 -ASE/BE did energize the crowd with his candid demeanor,” said Hvizdak. Edwards swooped through the crowd before head ing to Cleveland for the vice-presiden tial debate on Tuesday. Between the Oct. 1 and Monday rallies, Edwards visited the Chautauqua Institute in New York to prepare for the debate. Despite the national press coverage, Edwards wasn’t the only person cam paigning at the Oct. 1 rally. Dr. Steven Porter, the Democratic candidate who is trying to unseat Rep. Phil English, gave a quick speech that encouraged rally goers to get out and vote. A number of local official were on hand for the rally including Mayor Rick Filippi and former-Mayor Joyce Savachio. State Rep. Linda Bebko-Jones and state Rep. Flo Flabrizio, both of whom are up for re-election, where also in attendance. For the students who were there, just any old candidate wouldn’t do. It’s the inspiring words of Edwards that maHp the difference. What I found to be most strong and gratifying was the way he challenged the Bush administration’s world view.” said ** • • *
