University Park to hold commencement
ceremonies May 14-15
The University Park campus will hold its spring Commencement ceremonies on
May 14and IS. As of mid-April, 7,129-students-are scheduled to receive degrees at
the University Park ceremonies. That figure includes 26 associate, 6,137 baccalau
reate, 743 master's and 223 doctoral degree students. Systemwide, Penn State will
graduate a total of 10,010 students approximately 703 with associate degrees,
7,641 baccalaureate degrees, 1,380 graduate degrees, 115 medical degrees and 171
juris doctorate degrees.
Memorial service to honor students
who died in the past year
A public, multi-faith memorial service will be held at 12:15 p.m. today, in the
Pasquerilla Spiritual Center on the University Park campus to honor the 32 Penn
State students who are known to have died in the past academic year. "The service
is a time to bring the Penn State community together to remember these
students," said Sharon Mortensen, director of the Center for Ethics and Religious
Affairs. "Their family members and friends have been invited to attend." The ser
vice will include readings from different faith traditions, Glee Club music, a read
ing of the students' names and the ringing of the Old Main chimes. Family mem
bers will be presented with a Certificate of Achievement by the appropriate aca
demic deans during a reception.
Hucks commit $1 million
for new business building
An effort by the Smeal College of Business to raise funds for a new building on the
University Park campus has received a million-dollar boost from Penn State alumni
J. Lloyd and Dorothy Foehr Huck. The new building, slated for completion in sum
mer 2005, is situated at the eastern gateway to the campus. The four-story, $6B
million structure will increase academic space for the Smeal College by 35 percent
and be the university's largest academic facility.
Economic research institute
to hold annual conference
The Economic Research Institute of Erie (ERIE) will hold its fourth annual confer
ence on May 13 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Reed Union Building at Penn State
Behrend. One of the featured speakers at the event will be Richard Overmoyer,
deputy secretary for the Office of Technology Investment in the Pennsylvania De
partment of Community and Economic Development, who will speak on
Pennsylvania's new Keystone Innovation Zone (KIZ) initiative. KIZ is intended
to help create new technologies and new entrepreneurs for Pennsylvania's commu
nities, said James Kurre, co-director of the institute. Overmoyer's topic fits well
with the focus of this year's conference, which is technology, productivity, and Erie's
future.
