Erika Jarvis, Features Editor Coffee lines anger Behrend students and faculty by Rory Hamilton contributing writer The coffee counter in Bruno's café has many Behrend students and faculty members, angered and outraged. With more "Specialty" drinks being served at the coffee counter, One can expect to wait upto 20 minutes sometimes for a coffee refill. When standing in line, you can hear the complaints of the students or faculty as they endure a long wait. Over the past two years, Bruno's has added a large array of specialty drinks such as iced cappuccino and flavored caffeinated beverages. These drinks can take upwards of three and a half minutes to make. "It can be very annoying when you just want a refill and you have to wait behind people who want these specialty drinks that take a few minutes to make," said Debbie Hayes, a faulty member in the Office of Student Affairs. A 20-minute wait however is not always the case. ook lists wide range of hiccup cures By Carolyn Poirot Knight Ridder Newspapers If you are one of those conventional problem-solvers who never thinks "outside the bag," you may still be blowing into a paper sack to cure your hiccups _ and assuming that everyone else is blowing into one, too. Not so, says John Walbaum, author of a new "how-to" book, "The Know-It- All's Guide to Life" (Career Press, $14.99). Walbaum's book promises to let you in on the nitty-gritty of how to climb Mount Everest, cure hiccups, live to be 100 years old and dozens of other "practical, unusual or just plain fantastical things." He used sources as diverse as Plato, The Saturday Evening Post and an old medical journal in formulating his suggestions for a hiccups cure, Walbaurn said in a telephone interview. "Plato's cures included holding your breath, gargling with water and tickling your nose until you sneezed two or three times," Walbaum said. Folk remedies include holding a sugar cube or glob of peanut butter in your mouth until it melts or dissipates, drinking water through a handkerchief or paper towel, standing on your head, breathing through a paper bag and munching on a wedge of lime. The most unusual thing he found in his research was a hiccup-curing machine that tossed sufferers up and down 92 times a minute while they were drinking water. Walbaum recommends the Hughes/ Green hiccups cure, named for former. Through the Looking Glass by Mike Pingree KRT Campus FATHER OF THE YEAR A man in England abandoned his family, including his infant son, but, 20 years later, reunited with the boy at his request. The son brought his 19-year-old fiancee to the meeting. The father, now 53, subsequently stole his son's girlfriend, embarking almost immediately on a passionate affair with her. BOYS, THAT'S NO WAY TO BEHAVE Teachers at the Kinyui Boys School in eastern Kenya barred the students from attending discos and video shows to give them more time to study for their exams In response, the lads rampaged through the school in an orgy of destruction, finally setting the place on fire. SURPRISED TO SEE YOU OUT HERE An unemployed man in Sao Paulo, Brazil, agreed to serve the prison sentence of a robber to whom he owed $275 he couldn't pay. But three months after his alter-ego was locked up, the robber who was supposed to be in jail was caught committing yet The man in jail was sentenced to four months for illegally serving the three months. "It's the luck of the draw. You can sometimes walk right up and get what you need, but other times you have to wait 20 minutes," Hayes said. It is evident that the staff working in Bruno's Café is aware of the excessive wait as well. "Patience is a virtue. If you want quality coffee, good coffee takes time to make," said Bruno's café employee Liz Heidenreich. The staff sees the aggravation of the customers and does know that there does need to be a system when working in the café. "The staff here has been trying to develop a more efficient way of dealing with specialty orders and with the coffee refills," said Heidenreich. It is still unknown whether or not there are any definite plans to change the way Bruno's coffee counter is going to change how the counter is run. In the future, Behrend staff and students may not have to stand in line for 20 minutes, but for the time being, the wait goes on. hiccups sufferer Dave Hughes 1. Pour a tall glass of water. 2. While holding your breath and pinching your nose closed, repeatedly take sips of water until you feel like you are drowning, then stop. 3. Inhale deeply and breathe normally. The hiccups should be gone. For more stubborn cases, try icing down the nerve fibers that are responsible. You'll find them on either side of the neck (slightly off-center from the front), but Walbaum warns that icing your neck is a strange sensation, almost painful. In really serious cases, your doctor can give you a shot of an anti-shivering medication that is highly effective, or of baclofen, a muscle relaxer. Nimodipine, a drug that inhibits muscle contractions and is most often used to help repair damage caused by a ruptured blood vessel in the head, has also been used to cure hiccups, Walbaum says. "Hiccups have no beneficial purpose, though they do argue for taking smaller bites and chewing your food slowly," he says. With a name like "The Know-It-All's Guide to Life," we figured his book was bound to include some news you could use. If you want to know how to climb Mount Everest, avoid an IRS audit, remove a tattoo or run with the bulls, you'll have to buy the book _ or skim through it at your favorite bookstore. another robbery reicrunts & FUNNIES Friday, November 14, 2003 Perry Hall fills football void at Behrend with first Turkey Bowl Since the establishment of Penn State Erie, The Behrend College in 1948, the school has been without a football team. Many will blame it on the ageless Joe Paterno, while others will admonish the small size of this school. Guy Reschenthaler a resident assistant in Perry Hall, has solved Behrend's pigskin woes for at least one Saturday this November. The first annual Perry Hall Turkey Bowl is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sat urday, November 22 on the frozen tun dra of the Behrend Fields. Each floor of Perry, there are four has fielded a team of at least 1 I play ers. The double elimination tourna ment, which is only open to Perry resi dents, is expected to draw more than 60 participants. Reschenthaler will lead First Floor West into the trenches, doing battle with Jair Carrasquero's first floor east squad, Dave Daquelente's Second Floor West team, and the crew from Second Floor East, led by John Foerstner. "I wanted to plan a program that would unite the floors and add to Perry pride. The Turkey Bowl does this. Residents must pull together as a team, practice, plan and dedicate themselves to winning the big game ... and believe we all want to win," said Reschenthaler. All four floors have been practicing about one day a week for the last month or so, and the animosity and competition between the floors are building each day. "The excitement is contagious. We are all pumped to get out there and go to war," said Reschenthaler. One player, who wishes to remain anonymous, had this to say: "It's war. They're out there to kill you, so I'm out there to kill them. We don't care about anyone but this floor. They're going after my legs, I'm going to come right hack at them. I'm a soldier." This particular student may be taking his intensity just a little too far, but this shows how important this tournament is to Perry Hall residents. Reschenthaler won't hesitate to tell you his team is the heavy favorite "Who is going to win? Come on, my team, First Floor West. We've got the size, speed, talent, and determination. We're a tough team and I pity the offense that has to face our Steel Curtain Defense. Trust me, we are good," Reschenthaler said. While First Floor West may not have L.C. Greenwood, Joe Greene or Mel Blount, the team's confidence is still high. Coaches Carrasquero and Daquelente have yet to attend a practice or scrimmage for their respective teams, which leaves Reschenthaler and Foerstner's teams with an added advantage. Since Jopa's Nittany Lions have failed to entertain and satisfy the fans this year, maybe this is Behrend's chance to get a foot in the football door. An annual Turkey Bowl could he in to fill the football void that we Behrend students suffer from. "As for this building into a tradition, I certainly lii)pc so. This has the potential to develop into a Behrend tradition and I sure hope it does," said Reschenthaler.
