"I take great pride in the Behrend community's response to this year's United Way campaign," said Dr. Jack Burke, campus executive officer and dean. "Our volunteers and leaders worked hard to meet the goal, and this year the students really stepped up their fund-raising efforts. This tremendous response reflects the increasing commitment of faculty, staff, and students to those in need in the Erie community." Burke commended this year's campaign leaders for their work. The team included Dr. James A. Kurre, associate professor of economics; Dr. Ken Miller, director of Student Affairs; Brenda Bane, operator in the Copy Center of M.1.5.C,; Jill Forsman, Residence Life coordinator; and Jill Parker, assistant director of Residence Life. Catherine Hanhauser, assistant to the dean, coordinated campaign planning, and Peggy Shupenko, staff assistant in the dean's office, completed campaign implementation and follow-up. Shupenko commended the students on two new events organized by Residence Life. Students solicited used items and held a United Way Garage Sale on Oct. 18, and, with items donated by local businesses and craftsmen, they conducted a Helping Hands United Way Auction on Oct. 23. The two events, along with other student efforts, raised nearly $2,500.
