Women's soccer
continues winning
by Amy Frizzell

So far this season the women's' soccer
team has been blazing a path towards con
ference play. They've bowled over almost
every team they've encountered this year
and their record can only
back up their hard work at
5-1. Their only loss com
ing from Westminster Col
lege, with a score of 3-1.
On Wednesday the Lady
Lions added another notch
in their belt boosting their
record to 6-1, shutting out
Pitt-Bradford.
"I think we have a lot fur
ther to go, but winning this
game defiantly put us in the
mindset to continue winning
our conference games," said
sophomore, Holly Greiner.
Contributing to the 7-0
win was Greiner with two
goals, one assist and senior
Erin Mauer also with two
goals. Also chalking up one goal each was
junior, Jen Baker, junior Carrie Smock,
and sophomore Kacie Burns.
Sophomore, Heather Crawford had two
assists, sophomore Jill Vroman one assist,
and also sophomore Michelle Newland,
freshman Stephanie Ivancza, and fresh
man Markay Bresser all with one assist.

so it was definitely a success and a good

The men's golf team headed into its own invita
tional tournament at Peek n' Peak on September
18 looking to kick off the season with a strong
finish it its first full match. The Lions blue squad
finished tied for third place with Pitt-Bradford and
Pitt-Greensburg with a team score of 301.
The team was paced by junior Jeff Black's im
pressive round of 73. Anthony Pagliari, Kevin
Thieman, and Ryan Deimel all fired scores of 76
at the invitational, while Daniel Russo shot an 82
(the team's final tally is comprised of the four low
est scores). Daemen College captured the team
crown at the invitational with a score of 294, and
Penn State Altoona finished second with a 297.
The Lions were pleased with their performance
at Peek n' Peak, but they are still looking to im
prove. Pagliari, a junior, says, "The entire team
shot around a score of 76. Those are good scores,
but when you have Daemen College shooting 70s,
they just aren't enough." Pagliari adds, "We have
a great group of guys this year. We have a couple
guys returning and some stellar freshman. I have
high hopes for the team this year and I think
they[the team] have them as well."
The Behrend white team, comprised of four of
the team's freshmen, finished sixth at the tourna
ment with a score of 312. Josh Loanev n
Hull each shot a 77 for the Lions.
On Saturday, September 20, the men traveled to
Pine Acres Country Club for the Pitt-Bradford in
vitational. The course was rain soaked due to the
effects of Hurricane Isabel, and the harsh condi
tions took their toll on thit Lions.
The team finished with a collective 334 at
Bradford, good for just seventh out of 11 teams.
Pagliari and Russo had low scores of 83 with Black
and Aaron Becker not far behind, each shooting
an 84. Josh Hull was forced to withdraw after a
back injury suffered on the 4th hole.
"We just couldn't get anything together," ex
plains Black of the Bradford match. "I think ev
eryone had something that wasn't going their way
that day... apd when you have a couple things that
aren't working, it tends to be a long day."
Despite their frustrations over the Bradford in
vitational, the team is hungry and determined to
get their first win of the season. They'll get their
shot at the ECAC qualifier on September 25 at Uni
versity Park.
"We have a number of guys who can shoot low,
giving us a good chance to win at ECACs," says
Black, confidently. "We are looking to light it up
at UP," exclaims Pagliari, obviously excited at the
team's chance to display their talent in front of a
number of tough competitors. The Lions just need
a solid team effort at University Park.
"Most of our players are capable of shooting in
the low 70s when they're on top of their game.
Unfortunately, we haven't been able to get all the
players on top of their game at the same time,"
says assistant coach James Bowen. "Myself and
head coach Murphy are looking for the guys to
come out and shoot some low scores [at ECACs].
I think we will do well in the event."

way to set the road ahead to clinch the
AMCC title," said Newland.
The womens' next conference game
will be played on Saturday the 27th
against La Roche. The Lion's lost to La
Roche last year during AMCC playoffs
Women's soccer is off to a great start this
with a score of 2-1, ending their season
at 8-12.
"It is still early in the season and La
Roche this Saturday will be a competi
tive battle for us, but we plan to go and
win it," said Burns.
"Since La Roche knocked us out of
AMCCs last year I think we're all ready
to face them again, but we're going to
need a big fan base to support us," said
Newland.
The golf team is packed with talent and con
fidence this year, and when they put it all to
gether, they will be a force to be reckoned with.
On a side note, freshman women's golfer
Shelley Leonard is off to a great start this sea
son. Shelley finished with a 92 at the Behrend

When asked how he felt about his
team playing three tough matches over
three consecutive days, head coach
Jeff Barger didn't flinch. Not even
when two of those three matches are
against conference opponents
Frostburg and rival Penn State
Altoona.
"It's pretty common. We normally
play two to three matches in a
weekend," said Barger.
"In fact, we had on the schedule this
past weekend four matches."
This past Friday, the women took
on conference foe Chatham and lost a
closely fought battle 5-4.
"The game could have gone either
way," said Barger.
"It came down to winning two out
of the three doubles matches and we
just didn't do it. Every match we try
to win two out of three doubles
matches. It has been the determining
factor in all of our games. However,
this year we just have not been
consistent in doubles. We really need
to work on it in practice. Winning
those doubles matches really make a
difference in the outcomes."
But the doubles situation that has
been plaguing the women all year
didn't play a difference against a tough
John Carroll squad, who blanked the
Lions 9-0. The Lions could not match
the talent level of John Carroll.

Behrend's final action of the
weekend came against Alfred on
Sunday and the results weren't much
better than the previous .day. The
Lions did not play well and dropped
for the third time in three days, 8-1.
The women rebounded against
Thiel on Tuesday and came out
looking like a different team from the
one who showed up to. play Alfred.
The Lions roared their way to an
impressive 9-0 win, ^raising their
overall record to 3-8.
With roughly a month left in their
season until the AMCC
championships at Penn State Altoona,
the Lions are looking to gain ground
in the conference this weekend and
gain confidence.
"We need to win both non
conference matches this weekend
against Frostburg and Altoona," said
Barger. "We only have two conference
games left after that. Altoona is our
rival and they hive won the crown the
past couple of years. We're looking
to knock them off, We could really
use the confidence of a win over them
this weekend to build up more
confidence," said Barger.
• Not to be overlooked, Coach Barger
also said that Waynesburg would
prove to be a battle.
