Penn State football graduation rate be
among nation's public schools
The outstanding graduation performance by Penn State's student-athlete
-- 80 percent according to the recent NCAA graduation rate report -- is furthe
accentuated by the efforts of the Nittany Lion football team, which has the highes
graduation rate of any of the nation's public institutions that play Division I-A
football. According to the NCAA data, for football players entering the Universit
in 1996-97, Penn State's graduation rate of 86 percent was the program's third
highest figure in the 13 years the report has been issued, and well above the na
tional average of 54 percent. Coach Joe Paterno's team had the fourth-highes
graduation rate among all of the nation's 117 Division 1-A programs, trailing onl
Boston College, Notre Dame and Vanderbilt. For African-American football
players entering in 1996-97, the Nittany Lions' posted a superlative graduatio
figure of 85 percent to easily exceed the 42 percent national figure.

The medical minute: Separating fact fro
fiction

one medical swindler until the Federal Trade Commission put an end to its de
ceptive marketing. Unfortunately, as noted in the latest edition of the Medical
Minute, a service of Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, such outra
geous claims have been around about as long as there has been commerce. La
etrile was big in the 1960 s and 1970 s as a cancer cure. It was eventually proven
to have no benefit. Homeopathic remedies and magnets are sold with claims of
treating and preventing all sorts of medical problems, but without any substan
tial evidence. How can you spot a fraudulent claim? The most important
rule is: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
