Last time around
This is the last time you will
hear from me as a member of the
Behrend Beacon. I know that doesn't
sadden you but I just thought I would
mention it and say thanks to the newspa
per for allowing me to be a part of it for
the past four years.
I did not really know what to
write about and so I thought I
would look back at some of the
sports occurrences that have
happened while I have been at
Behrend.
However, I am going to attempt
to write this article from here
on out in rhyme. So bear with
me and give me a minute of
your time
My freshman year was 1999
and in the sports world every
thing was going fine. The
NFL took the lead in excitement and it
also provided a lot of entertainment.

Staff writer Junior Jessica Knapp ran into the
record books, breaking one of the oldest
records at Behrend. In her debut run of
the 5,000, meters she took third place
with a time of 19:37.10.

During the weekend the Behrend
men's and women's track team took on
Division I and Division H schools at the
Western Pennsylvania Championships at
Carnegie Mellon University.
The team also took on harsh weather
conditions which forced them to beat out
the wind along with their opponents.
"Once again the weather played havoc.
"Our pole vaulters vaulted with a cross
wind, and all the running finished into a
strong head wind," said head coach Dave
Cooper.
The women's team ended up taking
ninth place out of 11 schools with 24.5
points.
"Considering the competition we did
the best we could," said freshman. Laura

Titans that the championship was
"mine". No other league came close to
the tension, so it is they we will not men

to experience success, and I was a fan of
them all, I must confess. The men's
basketball team was prepar
ing for the next year, and
they would have no fear.
The women's tennis team
was winning the AMCC,
and on the top is where it
would be. This would

and that would draw a lot
of cheers.

"She is an excellent runner. It was
impressive and it shows a lot of potential
for the team to come," said Packosky.
Sharing Knapp's spotlight was
sophomore and team captain Jessica
Sarver. She took second place in the
1,500 meters with a time of 4:46.46,
qualifying her for ECAC's.
Also placing was freshman Staci

Behrend and it's men's basketball team
made its way to the NCAA. The Elite
Eight was it, but that was still an excit
ing day
In 2001 I joined the tennis team and I
was hoping it would be as much fun as
it did seem. The nation's concerns were
on terrorism and hatred, meaning the
days were tainted in red. Sports took a
back seat to our concerns and from this
incident everybody learns.
Behrend was still successful overall,
bringing home the President's Cup. Still,
citizens were wondering what was up.
Luckily, the Diamondbacks and Yan
kees gave viewers one hell of a match,
and onto this competition America could
latch. Craig Counsel! and Luis Gonzalez
were baseball's heroes, but the
firefighters and police made their actions
worth nothing but zeroes.

400 meter hurdles, along with Packosky

relay team of Mineweaser, sophomore
Claire Manelick. sophomore Bethany
Crooks, and Sarver took sixth place.
The men's team placed sixth out of
10 teams with 52 points. The Lions beat
out Allegheny College, the only other
Division 111 school, which took ninth
with 44 points.
Leading the men's team was junior
Isiah Meek, who placed second in the
110 hurdles.
"He ran a very good 15.57 in the
prelims but by the finals the wind had
picked up tremendously and he ran
15.77," said Cooper. "Which is still a
very good time ,considering the wind."
Also at the top of Behrends point
collection was sophomore team captain
Dave Masilunas, who finished sixth in

The year 2002 was full of tension, but
there are some sports worth a mention.
Maryland was the sentimental favor
ite, so Juan Dixon showed that the Ter
rapins were it.
New England beat football's Goliath
with a field goal. It was ironic how the
Patriots were the last standing soul.
Behrend's Junker center was finally
in full use for about a year and to the
Junker family the place was near and
dear. New sports were added for all and
they have been steadily improving over
all.
This was a bit vague for the younger
generation, but it brings back enough
memories for the Behrend nation. I hope
you enjoyed this corny column and there
is no need to be solemn. Good luck to
everyone from Behrend and community
and here's to peace, good sports, and
purity.

"We have a handful of athletes who
are ill or injured," said Cooper. "Getting
healthy is a priority before next week."
Coming up this weekend the teams will

"The team just wants to get as many
people to ECACs as possible and to place
