Let’s talk draft
Well, I know that it is Super Bowl
weekend, but I am not too intrigued by a
Tampa and Oakland Super Bowl. I will
be rooting for Tampa in case anyone
cares because I have liked them since I
can remember. I just don’t tell many
people about that.
I was pretty close with my preseason
picks of Tennessee and Philadelphia, but
I screwed up with my column last
semester. However, I am here to talk
about the NFL Draft that will take place
in a few months. This ljas me more
worked up than the Super Bowl that is
only a few days away.
The picks will be fun to try to guess
and I am no Mel Kiper Jr. Still, we do
know that the top 10 picks go in the
following order: Cincinnati, Detroit,
Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Arizona,
Jacksonville, Minnesota, Carolina, and
Washington.
Cincinnati needs a quarterback and
everyone knows that. Detroit needs
everything but a quarterback. Chicago
needs, well, a bunch. Houston can use
just about anything. Dallas has a
mastermind coach now, but they don’t
have an offense.
Heisman winner Carson Palmer can
expect to wear orange next season and
be thrown into the teeth of the NFL. He
wasn’t spectacular in the Senior Bowl,
but the Bengals will hope that he plays
like he did against Notre Dame this past
season in every game next season for the
Bengals. I still don’t know if that will
help him win. He will have no one to
throw to, but I suppose Cincinnati needs
someone to build a franchise around. 1

Swimming faces tough competition in two-day meet

Racing hard for two days in a row at
the Junker Center, and facing off against
Division II teams didn’t stop the Behrend
men’s swim team from beating Mount
Union and Division II team Edinboro.
The men beat Mount Union 119-103 last
Friday and turned right around and beat
Edinboro 108-83 on Saturday.
“This was a tough two-day meet. One,
because these were our first meets of the
new year. We had to knock off some
‘race rust’, and two, because it was a two
day meet, it is tough to swim fast one

Chicago should go with the best
quarterback available in the draft. Jim
Miller and Chris Chandler are not going
to improve that team. They have good
wide receivers if they can stay healthy,
so Byron Leftwich should be a good
selection. He has great touch for a big
man and could give Chicago the mobility
they need in the pocket. Hopefully, for
the Bears, Anthony Thomas will get
healthy again. This is the pick that is
clear cut to me, but we shall see in a few
night and then get up and do it again the
next day,” said Behrend swim coach
Josh Heynes.
Leading the men was freshman
Michael Sandretto. Sandretto crushed
his 1 meter diving record on Friday and
then broke it once again on Saturday. He
is now only 20 points away from
qualifying for Nationals. Sandretto also
did well in the 3 meter diving event by
completing more difficult dives than he
had done in the past.
The women’s swim team, although
swimming hard, could not quite catch the
teams from Mount Union or Edinboro.

Houston’s David Carr got sacked more
than any quarterback in the history of the
NFL in the Texans’ expansion year.
Gross and Eric Steinbach are the best
offensive linemen available in the draft,
so for Carr’s sake the Texans
should go this route.
However, there is a pile of
good receivers coming out in
the draft and Texans’
management may just hope
that Carr can get the ball off
before the pressure gets to him
and go with Miami receiver
Andre Johnson.
After Houston, it gets
tricky. Everyone knows that
Minnesota needs some serious
help on defense and Penn
State’s Jimmy Kennedy would
be a solid choice. Of course,
Terence Newman and Marcus
Truant are excellent
cornerbacks who would be
good picks. Rein Long of
Washington State won the
Outland Trophy and should be another
major player on defense for some NFL
team. Look for the second
half of the first round to be dominated
by defensive players and especially the
down linemen including Jonathan
Sullivan who is 6-3, 293 pounds. Chris
Kelsey, Boss Bailey, Kenny Peterson,
William Joseph, E.J Henderson, and
Andre Wool folk should all be first round
draft picks. More than likely, more than
half of the first-rounder will be from the
defensive side of the ball. Mike Doss,
the hard-hitting safety from Ohio State
Edinboro sneaked by 113-78. The
women were outnumbered and missing
valuable swimmers, but that didn’t stop
freshman Danielle Rearick from setting
her personal bests in the 1000, 500, and
200 yard freestyle.
“In the 1000 she got her best 500 split
and then beat that time in the 500 later
on that meet against Mt. Union. The next
day she got her best 200 free time of the
year and then again beat her 500 time
from the day before,” said Heynes.
“All the hard training done in Florida
is really starting to show. We just have
to keep going forward until
conferences.”
Behrend will have more compe
tition for the President’s Cup.
The AMCC has decide to add
three members to the conference
that should be in place by the
2004-05 academic year. The
schools are Hilbert College,
Medaille College, and Mount
Aloysius College.

and Gerald Hayes of Pittsburgh have a
legitimate chance of going in the first
round, too.
Who should the Steelers draft? In my
eyes, I say go for a running back in the
first round, but that is quite unrealistic.
Larry Johnson and Lee Suggs could be
available and I would be happy with
either of those players. However, the
biggest concern was on the Steelers’ pass
defense so the defensive backs will
probably be the focus of the first round.
Doss could still be hanging around at the
22 nd pick for Pittsburgh. Woolfolk is a
former wide receiver and could be a top
priority for Pittsburgh.
A running back such as Willis
MacGahee may still be around in the
second or third round for Pittsburgh and
a quarterback being drafted is almost a
given. I have no idea who that will be
but Chris Simms is probably not an
option. Kliff Kingsbury of Texas Tech
may hang around long enough as could
Phillip Rivers from NC State or Cody
Pickett of Washington. Of course, the
Steelers will make some local picks such
as Claude Harriot from Pittsburgh.
How many Penn State players will go
to the NFL in the draft? Anthony Adams,
Gus Felder, Michael Haynes, Joe lorio,
Larry Johnson, Bryant Johnson, Jimmy
Kennedy, and Bryan Scott all have a
chance. I think that six will be selected
and Felder, Scott, and guys such as
Shawn Mayer will be picked up in free
agency after the draft concludes. Of
course, nobody will match the 40 players
that Miami has in the NFL from the last
4 season of college football.
Although the double meets may try the
endurance of both teams, Heynes said
that this will build the team up for the
three-day invitational in Grove City.
Grove City is set to be a fast meet with
records sure to fall.
“Right now school is a threat toms.
Since we don’t have an AMCC
conference meet yet, Frostburg and
Altoona will be our main rivals in this
meet. Our goal as a team is to place
better than last year, and our individual
goals are to get some people to Nationals
and ECAC’s after the conference meet,”
said Heynes.
