Housing and Food attempts to improve
by Melony Burnom
staff writer
Is there anyone who thinks all of the
Food and Housing services is bad?
Does anyone get sick from the food
Where is everybody? Is Bruno's food really that bad?
served at Dobbins or tired of the big
chunk of money Bruno's takes out of
his or her meal plan, just from eating
one meal?
Are you sick of waiting for a wash
ing machine?
Randy Geering is trying to fix these
problems.
Food and Housing has 100-200 stu
dent food service employees, as well
as five food service managers, and 10
housekeepers. Their job is to provide
good living conditions for students.
Geering, director of Housing and Food
Services, says he is always open for
suggestions and is looking for new
ways to get students involved with
making decisions.
Geering currently meets with Joint
Residence Hall Council to hear sug
gestions and work with them to make
improvements.
Erie goes gaga for Goo Goo Dolls
by Rachel Lyon
staff writer
Goo Goo Dolls bassist Robby Takac didn't
lie when he said this part of their tour was for the
fans. And certainly the group's stop in Erie was no
exception. More than 2,000 fans packed
the Warner Theater Tuesday night and left
feeling very goo
Local radio station Star 104
sponsored the trio's first return to the
Warner in three years. And the guys from
Buffalo brought the house down again,
proving again why they are one of music's
most beloved icons. Fans stood for more
than 90 minutes of electrified rock,
singing right along with every song, with
hands in the air, and the occasional tiny
flair from a lighter.
After a rather folksy, acoustic
opening act in Lisa Loeb, the crowd was
screaming for the Goo, who opened in
dramatic fashion. Playing a double shot
from 1995's "A Boy Named Goo," songs
"Naked" and "Long Way Down" set the
stage for the rest of the show. Flashing
lights and pulsating guitar continued
through the group's current hit "Big
Machine." Of course, they didn't neglect
to perform the power ballads that
madethem famous, "Name" and "Iris."
The majority of the songs came
from the band's most recent album
"Gutterflower," which has pale sales
compared to 1998's "Dizzy Up the Girl,"
which sold more than three million
copies. "It's sort of a lull," John Rzeznik
admitted to Billboard.com. "We're
definitely not as hot as we were on the
last record." Since debuting at No. 4 on
Billboard's album chart back in April, Gutterflower
has only sold 495,000 copies.
Perhaps even a more pressing issue for fans
were the rumors flying around about a breakup.
With Rzeznik's first solo effort, "I'm Still Here
(Jim's Theme)" from Disney's "Treasure Planet,"
climbing the charts quickly, fans wondered if the
Dolls had plans on parting ways. Both Takac and
Rzeznik have spoken out against the highly
publicized rumors. The only truth in the matter is
He also works closely with Resi
dence Life and Housing and since he
has started the job at Behrend in June
2001 transferring from the Berks cam
pus he has made several improvements.
So far the students' requests have led
to the addition of more microwaveable
food selections and Ben &Jerry's Ice
cream to Bruno's dessert section.
However, Geering ultimately hopes
to become pro-active with the students
and the RAs to reduce damages.
He has fulfilled his expectations of
reducing damages by sponsoring par
ties for floors who go 30 days with no
damages, which has always been a
problem in Behrend residence halls as
well as thefts.
Stealing from Bruno's and Dobbins
has been a problem Geering has spent
a long time trying to get rid of.
He has solved the problem with theft
at Bruno's, by positioning the cash reg
isters outside of the doors; however, he
is still working on the problem at Dob
bins. He sees the problem as an obstacle
and is looking for new ways to over
come it. Geering looks at everything
with stride and simply calls the
Rzeznik has received offers to write for others and
wants to look into those possibilities.
"I'm a songwriter," he told Billboard, "and
any songwriter that's ever had a real career has had
to grow and change and evolve. Because if you do
music for anything other than the fact that you want

unfair to your fans."
And fans will be treated to a spectacular
show kicking off in February. The Goo Goos will
hit the road again for their first arena tour, slotted as
the opening act for Bon Jovi. In that time, the group
will finish their theater tour next month and take a
month to recuperate.
The Goo Goo Dolls/Bon Jovi tag team will
play State College in February, and Erie will live
off its Goo fix for the next few months.

student's mischief their way of push
ing the envelope to see what they can
get away with.
Geering has also found a way to
make the room selection process for re
turning students a bit easier. He created
a new system where students can re-
quest and fill housing contracts online
The students will have five weeks to
submit their housing contracts conve
niently from their computer, however
because the system is now done by
computer, it randomly sends out hous
ing contracts.
Even though Geering says nothing is
guaranteed in housing, the system helps
Behrend moves toward an easier as-
signment process
Geering is still looking for new ways
to make things better for students and
offers his email address rrg@psu.edu
as a means of submitting recipes and
menu ideas. If one is looking for more,
there is also a suggestion box located
in Dobbins.
