Scott Soltis and Zoe Rose, sports editors behrcolls@aol.com Lions still fighting as season nears end By Ed Mesaros staff writer The Behrend cross country team continued its successful season this past weekend as the team headed to Rochester, N.Y. to compete in the Harry F. Anderson Invitational held at Roberts Wesleyan College. A strong field of 13 teams showed up for the race, including a well-known Division I school in Cornell University. The men had a very respectable day, placing eigth out of 13 teams. Sophomore Tim Schultheis once again led the way for the men, placing 30th out of the large field with a time of 28:09. "He along with the rest of the team should be ready for a significant time drop for the AMCC and NCAA regional championships," stated coach Dave Cooper. Clayton Kirschner and Brent Beausiegner crossed the line only seconds apart, giving the duo 58th and 60th place finishes. Freshman Harry Balwick jumped into the Lions top five with his 29:24 8K and 70th place finish. Junior Dan Croft also made his top five debut with his time of 29:42, placing him 83ht overall. "No less than nine team members have finished in scoring positions so far this season. When all nine run one of their better races on the same day the team will be tough to beat," said Cooper. Despite battling injuries, the women's team continues to improve and place well at invitationals. At Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday, the team placed seventh out of 12 teams. The "Jessies" continue to lead the Lions as the season draws near the end. Jessica Sarver led the way this past Saturday with a 12th place finish and a 19:49 SK. The other half of the "Jessie" duo, Jessica Knapp, captured the n 0.2 spot and a 16th place finish. "Their one-two punch provides a measure of comfort to a team that has struggled with injuries most of the season," said Cooper. Jessie Coe continued to stay Men's Soccer School C.R. Despite battling injuries earlier this season, Beausiegner and Mike Barlett have battled their way back into contention. The pair placed 64 1 h and 74 1 h, respectively, at the CMU Invitational, placing them just outside of the team's top five. The women's team has also been plagued by injuries. Sophomores Claire Manelick and Susie Szafran have battled injuries for weeks now. Manelick dealt with tendonitis in her ankle, while Szafran battled shin splints and knee problems. Both are currently cross training in order to stay in shape. Zinger has battled her way back from a reoccurring knee injury that haunted her midway through the season.
