Page 2 The Behrend Beacon WEEKEND WEATHER SATURDAY SUNDAY MONDAY Partly Cloudy High: 65° Low: 48° BEHREND BRIEFS Behrend's new web site saves time If you haven't taken a close look at Behrend's new web site, you're missing a lot of information, according to Ed Blaguszewski, director of University Rela tions, and Carolyn Dudas, multimedia and computer support specialist. Blaguszewski, who has been conducting training sessions with individuals from a variety of areas across campus, said that the toolbar across the top of the page places viewers within three clicks of college history, facts, people, departments, news, calendars, admissions, financial aid, research, outreach, athletics, and com munity information. One of the best outcomes of the new web site is that everyone at Behrend has -- at their fingertips -- standard facts about the college to share and to use in writing about the college. If you are interested in a training session on the new web site, contact Mary Anne Geary at x 6159. Logan House open for faculty use Logan House was the setting for 39 faculty and student events in the 2001- 2002 academic year, according to Logan House Manager Judy Glembocki. Stu dent interaction with faculty outside of the classroom helps with retention ef forts, and Logan House is an excellent setting for such gatherings. Faculty who wish to schedule end-of-semester presentations or a reception, lunch, or dinner for class should call Glembocki to get on the schedule, which fills up quickly. Arrangements for food service and audiovisual equipment can also be discussed. To reserve a date at Logan House, contact Glembocki at x 6365 Parents and families weekend Penn State Behrend will host its annual Parents and Families Weekend today through Sunday. A little basic research goes a long way, and students can prepare to meet com pany representatives by reading up on each company in which they are inter ested. A list of the companies and links to many of their websites can be found on the Career Development Page. Inquiries about when the company is hiring, what Behrend academic quality makes up for smaller population by Aimee Pogson staff writer It was recently reported in the Eric Times News that Penn State Behrend will become the second largest campus in the Penn State system after the completion of a new residence hall. However, Dr. Jack Burke, interim provost and dean said that is not accurate. "The Penn State University Schools are categorized in different ways," Burke said. Population wise, the Commonwealth College reigns supreme, encompassing 12 different campuses. It is followed by University Park, which features the different disciplines: business, technology, etc. Then there are the campus colleges. such as Behrend. It is joined in this category by Capital College. a combination of Penn State Harrisburg and Schuylkill; and the new colleges of Abington, Altoona, Berks-Lehigh Valley and the Commonwealth College, which is still considered a campus College despite its large size. Last are the special mission campuses, which specialize in a certain area of study. These schools include Hershey Medical School, Dickinson School of Law, Great Valley Graduate Center, and the Pennsylvania College of Technology. The new $8.85 million residence hall, recently approved by the university's Board of Tustees, is expected to raise Behrend's enrollment from 3,700 to 4,000. Both schools offer a wide variety of undergraduate programs, with both baccalaureate and associate degrees, and some graduate programs, while Abington, Altoona, Berks-Lehigh Valley and the Commonwealth College offer associate degrees and very few baccalaureate degrees. Behrend served as the school that all of the other campus colleges were modeled after. In the way of academics, it falls as second on the list right behind University Park. Burke pointed out that to increase the population of Behrend, the school would have to lower admission standards to allow more people in. This would jeopardize the academic quality of the programs at Behrend. Although Behrend is second behind University Park, Burke still sees room for improvement. He would like to get more space on campus to expand the programs at Behrend. The school is also planning to construct a new building for Engineering and the School of Business. Administrators are working towards a fifth year accreditation for business, putting more money towards scholarship programs, and building more campus housing. They are also trying to hire and retain the best faculty that they can, and improve the academic culture of the school by introducing more active learning through programs similar to the award winning Speaker Series. When asked if he thought Behrend would ever surpass University Park in terms of academic quality, Burke replied that it was a big dream, one that would take quite a while to accomplish.
