Beacon: What drew you to the

• sports program at Penn State

, Behrend?
•
• Murphy: I went to Washington
•
• & Jefferson College from 1994-
• 1998 and played against coach
• Niland and his basketball team back
•
• then. Even then I was really im
pressed with his style of coaching.
• That's the main reason why I came
•
• here, because my ultimate goal is to
• • become a college basketball coach.
• [Now] I know a lot of good things
''. about coaching and the program.
•
Beacon: What can you bring now
• to the golf and basketball programs?
• Murphy: To be honest with you,
•
• this is my first year coaching golf,

be very competitive in both sports
Beacon: Does the golf team feel
complete with the limited amount
of practice they've had so far?
Murphy: We haven't had a prac
tice yet. We just got done with try
outs this past week and we have our
second meeting on Thursday. We
start practice Friday and our next
match the following Thursday. But
I think they're excited about a new
year and they're ready to get going
and be as competitive as possible.
Beacon: Now you have a young
team?
Murphy: They're a very young
team. I think we have five guys re
turning from last year and I believe
four of them are sophomores. Out
of the five new guys I believe three
of them are freshmen, one's a
sophomore, and one's a junior.
We'll definitely be young. Half the
team wasn't even on the team last
year. But they're good players. The
scores came in from the week-end
with the tryouts and they're pretty
good.
