    Erin Phillips breaks
basketball record
Erin Phillips once quit MYAA basketball because an
opponent flattened her on the court. The 5-11 senior,
however, was the one doing the flattening this past sea
son. Phillips became the all-time leader in points scored
for basketball, men or women. She surpassed the
women's mark of 1,409 held by Michele Madison, a
record that stood for more than 10 years. She then sur
passed Rick Demski's all-time record of 1,466 points.

ons to an easy 16-55 win. Behrend took seven of the top 10 places,
with Clair Manelick in fourth, Suzie Szafran in sixth, Jessica Coe
in seventh, and Tara Burgess in 10th. Frostburg's Inga Olsen, who
finished first in 2000, had to settle for fifth place.

Dave Cooper made the AMCC con
ference awards a clean sweep for the
women's cross country team, as the
longtime Union City instructor was
named AMCC Coach of the Year in his
first season at Behrend. The women
took first in the championships, while
the men took second.
"This was the first AMCC title for the
women and it couldn't have happened
to a nicer, harder working group of la
dies," said Cooper. "I feel good about
the title and I'm honored to have re
ceived AMCC coach honors as well."
Cooper then lead the track and field
team through a successful spring sea
son, as the Lions set numerous
records, then broke them the follow
ing weeks. How about an encore?

SGA had an outstanding voter turnout this year
with a total of 556 students participating, a number

As per custom, the start of a new
school year went hand-in-hand with the
start of new construction hassles. Last
year, several concurrent renovations
wrought havoc across the campus. This
semester only one major construction
project is in the works, but it is a biggie.
The East Side Access Highway is
beginning to make its presence known
to the Behrend community.
June 2001 saw the start of what the
Pennsylvania Department of
Transportation is calling Section A9O of
the highway project. Sections A9O & A9l
will connect Interstate 90 with the
Wintergreen Gorge (A9O refers to the
grading of this portion, while A9l
indicates the road paving). The highway
will then cross the Gorge via a to-be
constructed bridge, continue through
Shannon Road and East 38th Street, and
join McClelland Road.

Smith Chapel opens
to provide reflection
space for all
Thanks to a $3 million endowment from alumnus Larry Smith and
family, Behrend students have a place to relax and reflect. The
Smith Multi-faith Chapel opened its doors in September, and
contains worship and reflection space for students of all denomi
nations. The Chapel has also been the home to many weddings
and speakers like the "Soup for the Soul" series.
