Page 2B The Behrend Beacon Water polo women triumph over Mercyhurst, dunked by Grove City by Kate Levdansky Petrikis assistant sports editor Penn State Behrend water polo team lost two-of-three matches last weekend at the Grove City Invitational. The Lions opened with a 16-5 loss to Bucknell in the first meeting between Behrend and the young Division I school. Christine Williams had two goals, and Amanda Brown, Tara Braden, and Hollie Stash all contributed one goal. “It was just a wake up game for us,” said coach Josh Heynes. “We were preparing more for Grove City College.” The next game for Behrend was against Slippery Rock. Behrend lost 13-2, with Wil liams and Braden scoring Behrend’s only goals. This was a very physical game the whole way through. However, Behrend held their ground defensively. “They had to score on our entire defense, not just run and gun on our goalie,” said Heynes. Following was another match against Men's tennis ready for season finish at AMCC Championships by Mike Bello sports editor The men’s tennis team is set for the AMCC championships on Saturday at Frostburg after securing a win in its last game of the season against Lake Erie. After a season that saw Behrend go 8-13 overall and 4-4 in the conference, the Lions find themselves in the middle of the pack heading into the 9 a.m. start in the championships. Behrend’s season will end with the Championships. Behrend defeated Lake Erie and Pitt-Greensburg twice this season, but lost to Penn State Altoona twice and Frostburg three times, as well. The 2002 season mirrors the 2001 season, when Behrend went 3-4 in the AMCC, losing twice to Altoona and Frostburg as well. Behrend finished a distance third in last season’s conference championships, but looks for different results this time around. On Sunday, the Lions played Altoona in their third of five straight road games. The Lions continued to struggle against the AMCC’s only undefeated team, dropping a 7-2 decision, the exact same score from the teams’ first meeting on March 23. Michael Oey defeated J.D. We were down pretty much the entire game, but the ladies held their ground and came back in the end with three goals from Sarah McGarvey.” This team should not be tough for Behrend, given the previous wins earlier this season for Behrend against Mercyhurst, but it seems Mercyhurst gets pumped when they play Behrend. Behrend triumphed, however, with a score of 9-7. Wil liams had an outstanding five-goal game, and Brown also contributed a goal. After the big win, Behrend was ready to play the game they had been waiting for against Grove City. “This was the game we really wanted to win,” said Heynes. Be cause Grove City knocked off Washington & Jefferson and then Goldstein forced Oey to play three sets in their first meeting. Andrew Schenck lost to Jim Hofer 6-3, but came back to win 6-4 and 6-3. Dave Cooper won his first set against David Bruno 6-4, but lost 6-4 and 6-0 in the other two sets. Sheet Galliara lost 6-4, 6-1 to John Allen, although all four Behrend players improved their scores from the first meet. Brent Carlson and Jacob Hillmann lost the last two singles matches, albeit against different opponents than before. Cooper and Carlson dropped the first doubles set 8-1, while Oey/Hillmann and Schenck/ Steve Broussard both lost 8-4. Although the doubles teams have been reshuffled since March 23, overall the Lions secured more points than before, as well. Against Frostburg on Saturday, the Lions again showed improvement from before, but Frostburg was too much for Behrend in an 8-1 loss. Behrend also lost to the Bobcats 6-3 on April 7. Oey and Hillmann won their doubles match 8-4 for Behrend’s only win, while Schenck/Broussard lost 8-1 and Cooper/Carlson fell 8-1. In the singles matches, Carlson lost 6-4 before returning the favor against Scott Reust. Carlson forced Reust into an extra point, but lost the final set 7-6, including 7-4 in the tiebreaker. Williams had a total of 10 goals on the weekend. Next up for Behrend is the South ern Division Championships. In Behrend’s bracket, they get to play Michigan and Slippery Rock. If thing go as planned, Behrend should meet Washington & Jefferon in the second round of the tournament. W&J lost their main player due to an accident in practice, and the team behrco!ls @ aol.com is really hurting. So Behrend has a chance for a win, and a national ranking in Division 111. The passing and shot selection still needs work. “We are preparing for the Championships by having the men’s team at our practices to scrimmage us,” said Williams. ‘To be suc cessful we just need to work as a team and not give up.” The doors were opened for Behrend in some games, but their hesitation and bad passing closed them immediately. “This has been a great year for women’s polo here at Behrend,” said Heynes. “At first we thought there was not going to be a team, due to lack of numbers. But now we have 11 very dedicated women who deserve a lot. They sacrificed weekends and spring break vacation to play and train. They stuck through the tough losses and the great wins. Just by looking at the stats alone, this year was far more successful then anyone could of hoped for only a second year team, and you really get that feeling when you see the team and talk to them.” Andrew Schenck (foregrciuricljrarid Steve :! ‘f * Broussard (background) will lead Behrend fri doubles play heading into the AMCC champi onships.
