A guide to the ZUO2 Student Government Association Elections Out of 22 candidates, only 11 will be elected to the SGA Senate The Student Government Association’s Preamble begins, “We, the governing body of The Behrend College student population, shall strive to give voice to the student body..lt continues to say our mission is to “contribute to enhancement of the social and intellectual life of students...represent the interests of the student body.. .support the rights of students.” As you can read, SGA’s entire purpose is to listen and take action to better student life at Behrend. Therefore, it is time to put all attention on you, the student body. There are many pressing issues for students throughout an academic year and you can be better informed of issues with constant communication from SGA. The issues that we are focusing upon are issues that many students are concerned with now and will continue in the future. TUITION • Every year the amount of tuition increases at Penn State. We plan on keeping students updated and informed of any initiatives that will aid us in keeping tuition down or getting more money from the state. It is important that SGA takes the initiative by supplying students with this knowledge. • The Information Technology Fee, Student Activity Fee, MIS surcharge fee, etc. will be communicated through meetings, emails, flyers, etc. so students can understand SGA Senate Candidates: Joe Greer Major: Marketing Semester standing: 4 I think Behrend is a good place to be and I would like to make it a better place by doing whatever I can on behalf of the students. While I can’t make any promises, I think you should vote for me just because I said so and I never win this stuff. Jerry Maguire said it first, “Help me help you.” Natalie Lytle Major: Biology Semester standing: 2 I was in various organizations all through high school. I was an officer for my high school’s student council for four years as well as a district officer for a year. I have many new ideas that I hope can be considered by SGA. There are many great ideas happening already, but I would like to see them finished. 1 would like to finish the Penn State Behrend radio station project so that students can enjoy their own music over the radio. I would also like to tackle the parking problem by speeding up the design and construction of new parking. outside of Bruno’s & FALL 2002 - SPRING 2003 SGA PRESIDENTIAL/VICE-PRESIDENTIAL PLATFORM "REPRESENTING THE VOICE OF THE STUDENTS" PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE, Brandi Hovis; VICE-PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE, Katie Leary Jennifer Sutter Major: Marketing/ International Business Semester standing: 4 The position of SGA senator is a great responsibility and will be given up to 11 people that you, the voters, elect. Those 11 people should be responsible, open-minded, and willing to listen. I contain all of these attributes. If I were on SGA, I would listen to the opinions of the student body and work hard to make the changes that you feel necessary. There are many issues here at Behrend that cannot be ignored. If I am elected, I promise to deal with each of these issues individually, and do my best to reach the outcome hoped for. Nate Snyder Major: Business Management Semester standing: 4 I should be a representative in the SGA to give a voice for student opinions. Speaking in front of people is a natural ability of mine. I will represent commuters, resident students and students that belong to fraternities. I have been involved in many activities in both high school and college, therefore I have a diverse background. While involved in these activities I have learned valuable leadership skills. I am interested in helping my fellow college students and will strive to ensure justice is preserved. Elections will take place April in Hammermill bldg. Katie Leary (left), and Brandi Hovis (right) will run uncontested at this year’s SGA elections and take advantage of the money they are paying each semester at Behrend. For example, the Information Technology Fee has become a concern with students this year. We plan to investigate the decrease in bandwidth Joe Bianco Major: Mechanical Engineering Technology Semester standing: 6 “Behrend sucks!” I’m sure everyone’s heard that before, and I’m sick of it. I was always taught, “If you don’t like something, don’t bitch about it, do something about it.” That’s why I’m running for senator. I’m sick of driving past campus Friday afternoon and seeing everyone’s parents taking them home for the weekend. I’m sick and tired of going to the school where most people can’t wait to leave. It doesn’t take much to change things around here; people just have to get involved. 1 know this is short, but 1 only have 100 words. Vote for me. Lata. Rob Lewis Major: MIS Semester standing: 4 SGA to me is a good way to get involved with your college and get things done that you want to see happen. You should vote for me for SGA senator, because I have a lot of good ideas for Behrend and would try very hard to make them happen. Things such as more parking, lower tuition and a credit system for housing are just a few of the things that I would like to see changed. I am a hard worker and always open to suggestions. So on April 17-18, please vote for me for SGA senator. per student and the reasons for the system being slower. DIVERSITY • We also plan to concentrate on diversity throughout Erin Strayer Major: Business Semester standing: 4 Hi. How are you doing today? I’m well, thank you for asking. You see, I am just like you; the only difference, besides physical features, is that I want to hold an SGA office. I want to know, and do, what you/us, the student body would like to change about Behrend. Don’t worry; whatever affects you, affects me. That’s why you should vote for ME for SGA senate. Scott Soltis Public Relations Semester standing: 2 There are 22 candidates running for SGA Senator this year. What sets me apart from 19 of the candidates is that I have SGA experience. I am currently a Senator and serve on the Budget, Student Life, and newly formed Diversity committees. I have been representing the students well in my time as a Senator and would like to continue to devote my time dying to make Behrend a better place for ALL students. Thank you for voting even if it is not for me; involvement is crucial for SGA and the Penn State Behrend community to be successful. Thanks. 17th & 18th from 9 a.m. Keenan Hansen Major: Psychology Semester standing: 6 Vote for experience! If I am elected, it will be my fourth year as an SGA senator. Throughout the years I have been working for students and trying to bring their views to the table at SGA. If elected, I will continue to do my best to bring student ideas, concerns, and viewpoints to SGA. I will do my best for you, the student. So when it comes to election time, vote for experience, vote for commitment, vote for Keenan Hansen. 2002 - 2003 SGA Secretary (uncontested) Tara Pavan Major: Communications and Media Studies Semester standing: 2 I was very excited to be nominated and elected as SGA secretary for the end of the 2001- 2002 school year. If I am elected again as SGA secretary for the 2002-2003 school year, I feel I will contribute a lot of my ideas and energy to the organization. If elected for next year, I will make a suggestion box for student concerns that will be placed at many locations on campus. Statements and photo not available Victoria Anderson Lori DeFabio Jonathon D. Fisher until 2 p.m. the campus. We plan to encourage faculty and administration to play an active role in promoting the diversity on this campus. Communication is key to this goal and we would like it to be an open path between students, faculty, and administration. UNIVERSITY FACULTY SENATE • The University Faculty Senate makes very important decisions that students should know. We have a student representative that is able to sit on this senate and vote on very important issues (such as the academic calendar change) for all Penn State students. We would also like to see the UFS Representative became a more active role in SGA. We think that this way the senate will be able to inform students of changes going on and fulfill their job as representatives of the students better by voicing the students’ opinions and views. We will also support many other committees and activities that SGA has done in the past. They include THON, the 48-hour dance marathon that raised money for pediatric cancer, Behrend Winter Olympics, Senior Class Gift, and FM radio station, and much more. The goals and aspirations we have will be strongly pushed next year by our enthusiasm and pride in SGA. We are here to work with you and help make a difference with issues that matter to YOU. Thank you and the best of luck to all of the students running for a senate position. Tom Medovitch Major: Marketing & International Business Semester standing: 6 For years now, Behrend has been known as, “The Suitcase College.” Why? People complain that there is never anything to do, or that they have no reason to stay here. Well I want to give them a reason to stay. Behrend has the potential to be way more exciting than it is. There is a major lack of motivation in this school to be involved in student organizations and social events. I would like to see to it that students get involved. Use your vote to change Behrend for the better. Vote me for senator. Natasha Gayle Guinevere Habersham Latashia Marie Smith Nana Osei-Bonsu Marvin Telp Kristin Grudowski Major: Communications and Media Studies Semester standing: 7 As a current SGA senator running for reelection, it is great to see such a highly contested election. To see that kind of interest in an organization that I am a part of is really exciting. With so many new faces joining the senate, it is important to have experienced members aiding in the new senators’ transition. 1 am involved in the student life, public relations, radio station/ fundraising, and THON committees. If reelected, I will continue to work for the best interest of the students and our campus, work to bring about a second Winter Olympics, and help to make the new members of SGA feel as comfortable, confident and committed as I do as a current senator.
