The Behrend Beacon Altoona manhandles Behrend tennis team at Pennbriar by Mike Bello sports editor The men’s tennis team was looking for revenge Saturday evening against Penn State Altoona at the Pennbriar Athletic Club. Instead, the Lions found nothing but heartache. Altoona, the No. 2 team in the conference behind Frostburg last year, used a clean sweep of the doubles matches to roll to a 7-2 win over Behrend. The win dropped Behrend’s record to 2-6 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Altoona improved to 4-0 and 2-0. More importantly, the win gave the team a chance to see where it stands in the conference and what the players have to do to improve. “The loss to Altoona was a wake up call,” said Steve Broussard. “We went into the match thinking that they would be tough but beatable. They looked real solid.” Dave Cooper started things off in singles play with 6-0 and 6-1 losses to Altoona’s David Bruno. The Lions didn’t back down though, as Mike Oey and Brent Carlson won Water polo team works out the kinks for tournament next weekend by Kate Levdansky Petrikis assistant sports editor It’s been two weeks since the women’s water polo team last competed in a match, and it won’t play again until next weekend. This has made practice somewhat difficult. “It has been two weeks since the water polo team’s last game, so practice is hard to do, when motivation is slipping due to the holiday coming up,” said coach Josh Heynes. The Lions are working to improve weak areas, and trying to make things as perfect as possible. Swimming yardage has to go up because Indiana’s pool is larger than what the players are used to. Good passing and great play making will be the keys to a victory next weekend. “It is very difficult to stay focused on improving, but I am bringing in the men’s team to help out and do some scrimmages with us,” said Heynes. “I think having some fun this week and making practices not so intense will help them not bum out before next weekend.” But Behrend is definitely looking forward to its next game. Jacob Hillman forced Yannick Riverti into an extra game before losing 7-5. He dropped the second set 6-3. Andrew Schenck lost by the same score to Altoona’s Jim Hofer, before forcing Hofer to work overtime in a 7-6 Altoona win. Shetfl Galliara lost the final singles match of the day 6-0, 6-1 to John Allen. The Lions then struggled mightily in doubles play. Cooper and Oey dropped the first set to Bruno and Riverti 8-3. Carlson «nd Hillman followed that up with an 8-3 loss to Goldstein and Kowaleski. Jacob Cornwell and Broussard dropped the last set 8-2. The loss was a disappointment to the Lions, but it also gives the team extra incentive when it plays Altoona on April 14. “I think we can beat them,” said Broussard. “It became a new goal for us. As a result, Behrend’s next game is 11 days after the Altoona match, Wednesday against Edinboro. The time off can be a blessing for some and yet can disrupt the momentum other players have built. “Some people need to relax for a week,” said Broussard. “Others want to work harder to improve for next weekend. What it all comes down to is that we know what we have to do personally. We just have to do it.” The Lions also play Alfred next Friday before hosting the Behrend tournament on April 6 with Frostburg, Alfred, Thiel, and Behrend participating in a round robin format. Should the weather prevent the teams from playing on the Behrend tennis courts, the teams will move indoors to the Pennbriar. THE BEHREND SPORTS SCENE Men’s Tennis School C.R. However, Behrend really wants to concentrate on Washington & Jefferson, since it will be the first time they have played this year. After the Behrend Invitational, the Lions believe they can beat any team. “Since we won three games at our last tournament, our confidence has been boosted,” said captain Amanda Brown. “We want to continue to work hard so we can play well at our upcoming tournaments. We know that we need to really concentrate on working on our plays and shooting, so we are ready when we take our trip to Indiana.” Behrend added two more offensive plays, but the Lions are going to primarily stick with the same defense, since it worked so well for them in the past. Heynes plans on trying some new people in the starting lineup, as well as people at different positions to see if there will be any improvements. “We are very excited because we get to play a couple new teams and also challenge a couple we have already played,” said Brown. “Now that we have our first few wins, we are ready to go out and play our best!” PENN STATE RF.HRF.ND LIONS National Hockey League League Leaders Points (Pts) Player Team POS J Iginla CGY RW M Naslund VAN LW JJagr WAS RW J Sakic COL C A Kovalev PIT RW Plaver Team PQS J Iginla CGY RW B Guerin TOR C M Sundin BOS RW B ShanahanDET LW D AlfredssonOTT RW Goals Against Average (GAA) Player Team POS GAA P Roy COL G 1.93 R CechmanekPHl G 2.06 D Hasek DET G 2.10 S Burke PHO G 2.20 J Giguere ANA G 2.21 Plaver A Oates WAS C 60 J Sakic COL C 48 N Lindstrom DET C 47 A Brunette MIN LW 46 J Stumpel BOS C 46 Goals Goals 44 36 36 35 35 Assists (Ass.)
