The ball is out of the Lions’ court for AMCCs
by Mike Bello
sports editor
The waiting is the hardest part, as far as the
women’s basketball team is concerned. After
doing everything in their power to wrestle the
AMCC tournament away from Penn State
Altoona except actually defeating the Lady
Cougars, the Lions must hope Pitt-Bradford can
defeat Altoona on Saturday to knock the
Cougars into second place. Bradford lost to
Altoona by 15 points earlier in the season. On
Wednesday, Altoona defeated Frostbuig by six
to jump to 9-2 in the AMCC.

Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Junker Center against
Pitt-Greensburg, third in the AMCC. Should
Behrend defeat Pitt-Greensbuig and if Altoona
wins its last conference game, the Lions will
host the No. 7 seed on Wednesday, Lake Erie.
The No. 1 team gets a bye on Wednesday. The
Lions would play the winner of the Pitt-
Greensburg/Frostburg game Feb. 22 and quite
possibly Altoona Feb. 23 - both in Altoona - for
the AMCC crown.
It doesn’t really matter to the players where
they play. They will be ready to win.
“If we will have to play on the road, it will be
a difficult task, but one that we can accomplish,”
said senior Christine Chamock.

“After we beat Greensburg on Saturday, we
will go wherever we have to for the
tournament,” said senior Kate Costanzo. “We’ll
be ready and well prepared. Here or there, we’re
ready to win another AMCC championship.”
Behrend last won the tournament in 1999.
Costanzo reached a milestone of her own on
Monday, scoring 16 points against Grove City
to become the sixth player to reach the 1,000-
point plateau (1,001). The Lions lost to the
Wolverines 72-49, dropping their record to 13-
11 overall, although they maintained a 9-2
conference record. Before breaking the record,
Costanzo had one tough decision to make.
“Coach (Fomari) called a time out with like
two minutes left in the game and told me I was
a basket away from 1,000,” said Costanzo. “So
she wanted to know if I wanted to stay in and
try to get it at Grove City or come out and wait
until Saturday. I decided to stay in to see if I
could get it there because I'd rather do it quietly
on the road.”
So with 43 seconds left, Costanzo took a pass
from Bambi Lewis and sank a 15-foot jumper.
Senior Christine Chamock gets the ball knocked
loose on a rebound Saturday at the Junker Center.
Charnock scored 14 points and grabbed four
rebounds against the Redhawks.

“I have played with two other 1,000-point
scorers,” said Costanzo. “I have always looked
up to Jen (O’Lare) and Erin [Phillips] as players
and teammates. I’m just honored to join them. It
also says a lot about my teammates and coaches.
You can’t score 1,000 points without them.”
Behrend’s offense chilled in the first half,
making only 20 percent of its shots (6-of-30).
Grove City shot over 50 percent and was up 34-
18 at the half, highlighted by a 10-0 run midway
through the half. Behrend came out stronger in
the second half, but the Wolverines, who used
16 players in the game, were too much for
Behrend. The Lions shot 27.1 percent overall
while Grove City made 47.6 percent of its shots.
Phillips and Costanzo both added 14 points,
while Phillips grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Phillips stretched her points record to 1,526 after
back-to-back 14-point games. Behrend avoided
foul trouble most of the night, sending Grove
City to the line nine times (6-of-9) while the
Lions made 15-of-19. The loss snapped the
Lions’ four-game winning streak.
The Lions showed better poise Saturday night
in an 84-60 win against La Roche
in front of 303 fans at the Junker
Center. Behrend (43.1 percent) shot
only slightly better than the
Redhawks (41.9 percent), but the
Lions’ sharp free throw shooting put
the game away. They shot 22-of-26
from the line (84.6 percent) while
La Roche made 7-of-13. For the
season the Lions are shooting at a
69 percent clip.
Costanzo and sophomore
Erica Mozdy were the stars of the
game, as both players sank 22 points.
Costanzo also grabbed 11 boards and
Mozdy sank five 3-pointers and had
seven steals. Chamock and Phillips
added 14 points.
As the Lions head into the
post-season, one concern for the
team has been injuries. Sophomores
Carly Cochran (broken thumb) and
Crystal McGarvey (tom ACL) have
been out since Jan. 23 and Jan. 19,
respectively. McGarvey is out for
the season and Cochran may be back
next week after an evaluation on
Tuesday.
Senior Katie Weigold was
out of action for the Grove City and
La Roche games with a deep bone
bruise on her knee. The Lions were
forced to play with four reserves for

Sophomore Bambi Lewis goes up for
two against La Roche on Saturday,
those games. Fomari hopes Weigold will be
ready for Saturday.
The Greensburg game on Saturday is also
senior night. The team will announce all four
seniors - Phillips, Costanzo, Chamock, and
Weigold - and hold a party for the players
afterwards. The seniors know the game will be
unforgettable, but there is still work to be done.
“What we need on senior night is a big win
so that we are guaranteed a tie for first in the
conference,” said Costanzo. “We’ve (the four
seniors) finished in first all three years that we’ve
been here.”
“For me, senior night is special,” said
Chamock. “It will represent the last 13 years of
games that I’ve played in, especially the ones at
Penn State Behrend.”
The Lions, though, can’t help but look ahead
to a possible rematch with Altoona.
“I wish that we would’ve beat Altoona so that
we could host the tournament, but what
happened, happened,” said Chamock. “Now
we’ll have to beat them in the championship
game on their court.”
The Lions can’t wait for the chance to get
revenge against the Cougars.
