Freshman Joe Deely practices on Wednesday for Behrend's match with Alfred on
Saturday at the Junker Center. The Lions are scheduled to participate in seven
matches in the next month.
Sophomore Holly Stash enjoys a swim during the same practice. The Lions
returned to school several days before classes started to get in as much swimming
time as possible. The Lions hope the extra workouts will pay off in the end.

The 20(11-2002 holiday season is now over,
and it is hack to school and practice for the
swim teams. The men and women dove in
headfirst Jan. 5 to begin a week-long train
ing camp here at Penn State Behrend. Nor
mally, the teams would travel to Florida or
Texas, but unforeseen circumstances pre
vented Behrend from going this year. Luck
ily, the weather in those out-of-state areas was
worse than here in Erie.
Behrend made the most out of its training,
having one high-intensity water workout and
serious dryland and lifting routines. The
players performed these exercises twice a day
for three hours.
"Yes, they are sore and tired, - said head
coach Josh Heynes. "But, it will all pay off
come conference time. - Which, by the way.
is in just six shofi weeks
"We are just training right through the meet
on Jan. 12. It has been awhile since we raced
so this meet should be interesting. We need
to get the cobwebs out," said Heynes.
Their competitor, Division 111 school
Alfred University, is a difficult opponent.
The meet is at Behrend (I p.m), and Heynes
hopes the home crowd will come and make
