Swim teams capture gold, silver, bronze at ECAC
by Ed Dearolf
staff writer
Thirteen swimmers from Penn State
Behrend competed in the ECAC champion
ships last weekend at Rowan University in
New Jersey.
"This was an excellent achievement for a
second-year team," said head coach Josh
Heynes. "We were excited to have 13
swimmers qualify, and do very well against
top Division 111 performers."
The men placed eighth while the women
placed 15th. The men's 200 medley relay
team won the ECAC championship and also
won the 400 medley relay. The team was
made up of Casey Doody, Lucas Dushac, Jon
Harding and Justin Lucas. The team also had
other good finishes including Doody's two
second-place finishes in the 100 and 200
backstroke, Dushac's second-place finish in
the 200 breaststroke and two third-place
Notre Dame no longer
by Andrew Bagnato
Chicago Tribune
As Notre Dame athletic director Kevin White
launches his search for the next Fighting Irish
football coach, he must contend with two
powerful opposing forces.
One is history.
The other is reality.
History demands White find a fitting heir to
Notre Dame's honor roll of coaches - a list that
includes Rockne, Leahy, Ara and Lou, coaches
so big they needed only a single name.
But reality indicates Notre Dame is no longer
one of the nation's top coaching jobs.
That's why White, who fired Bob Davie on
Sunday after five seasons, is not merely going to
be able to hang a "Coach Wanted" sign outside
his office and wait for a line to form.
He will have to do some serious recruiting.
Forget the media myths about Notre Dame's
place among football's fabled programs. The
reality is that the university's tough academic
standards, coupled with its relatively low pay for
coaches, have reduced its appeal among many

In just its second season as a varsity sport
at Penn State Behrend, the men's and women's
swim teams hope to make a big splash and
send a message to other Division 111 team s .
The swim teams are coached once again by
Heynes, who also heads the men's and
women's water polo teams, along with
assistant coach Jennifer Slack. So far the
men's team has posted a record of 1-I with a
win at Buffalo State on Nov. 6 and a tough
loss at home against (iannon on Nov. 20. The
women have opened the season with a record
of 0-2.
With 15 men and eight women on the teams,
top swimmers for the men include Doody,
Dushac, and Harding. The top women are
Samantha Cihula, Rollie Stash, and Christine
Williams.
Fhe team has already greatly improved from
front-line coaches
There is also the matter of Notre Dame's
schedule as an independent. At most schools, the
coach picks his non-conference schedule. At
Notre Dame, the entire I I -game slate is set for
him. And even though the schedule will almost
always he among the toughest in the nation, he
will be expected to win nearly every game
because this is, after all, Notre Dame, which has
eight Associated Press national titles, though only
one sinc;! 1977.
Many coaches will he intrigued by the job, hut
White must discern between the truly interested
and the opportunistic. In the latest trend on
campus, coaches are becoming richer by flirting
with big-name outsiders, then staying home.
Gary Barnett used Notre Dame's interest to his
advantage when the Irish sought him to succeed
Lou Holtz in 19%. Barnett, who had produced
improbable hack-to back Big Ten titles at
Northwestern, was widely rumored as a Notre
Dame candidate. But he issued a statement that
essentially said he had a better deal in Evanston,
and that statement made a big splash with the
Wildcats' prospective reel-this.

last year. While only losing Adam Demarco
and Betsy Voight to University Park and
Lindsay Spiegel to Mercyhurst College from
last year's team, the swimmers are more
competitive and have more well-rounded
teams.
"You name the event we have swimmers
available to do it, which is a large step from
last year when we only had a few people who
could swim any event other than freestyle,"
said Heynes
The season runs from October through
March, consisting of about 12-16 matches,
and can run even longer if the swimmers
qualify for the NCAA championships. As of
right now, the team is not technically in a
conference. Of the other colleges in the
AMCC, only two have swim teams, but the
others will most likely have one sooner or
later. Because of this, the swimmers do not
have any main rivals just yet. The closest
thing is any Division 111 school in
rates as one of top coaching jobs
A lot of local Irish fans insisted Barnett was
making a big mistake. They may have noticed
that Barnett led Colorado to the Big 12 title and
a Bowl Championship Series berth Saturday
night.
Barnett is not considered an Irish candidate
this time. He already has a better job in Boulder.
It is difficult for die-hard Domers to believe
coaches would be leery of the Irish post. That
doesn't matter. White, a consummate athletics
professional who is not a Notre Dame graduate,
understands the stark difference between history
and reality.
"At this point I can't stand in front of you and
tell you that we've got a program on the verge
of competing (for) and hopefully winning the
national championship," White said at the news
conference called Sunday in South Bend, Ind.,
to announce Davie's dismissal. "We don't have
that kind of program at this point."
The next coach will be expected to develop
that kind of program.
Oakland Raiders coach Jon Gruden, said to
be among White's top targets, is an interesting
candidate. Also an unlikely one. Gruden works

The teams had planned on taking a trip to

unfortunately the trip was cancelled. The

for Al Davis and probably wouldn't be available
for two months, if then. Notre Dame has to move
faster. The same timetable could rule out San
Francisco 49ers coach Steve Mariucci, who
presents strong credentials.
In the college ranks, Oregon's Mike Bellotti is
seen as a candidate. White would be smart to call
Ron Turner, who is a hot commodity after leading
unheralded Illinois to an outright Big Ten title.
Turner may be tired of being the warm-up act at a
basketball school. If Turner goes 10-1 at Notre
Dame, he isn't going to play his regular-season
finale in a half-empty stadium.
"You always have a short list," White said. "I
think people who have done this over time and
have had any success, that tends to be how they
operate. So there are always people that you're
kind of paying attention to."
One of those people could be Harvard coach
Tim Murphy, who worked for White at Maine.
At 44, Murphy is relatively young, but he's been
a college head coach since he was 30. Murphy
produced a turnaround at Cincinnati before
moving on to Harvard, where he recently led the
Crimson to its first perfect record in 88 years.

After recruiting talented players to Harvard,
Murphy would be unfazed by Notre Dame's
demanding admissions policies. Unlike many of
the glossier names, he wouldn't be insulted by
Notre Dame's pay scale.
But White shouldn't delay if he's going after
Murphy, because Murphy is said to be on the
Naval Academy's short list.
Irish fans may roll their eyes at the notion of
hiring a Division I-AA coach. But Ohio State fans
had much the same reaction when the school hired
Jim Tressel from Division I-AA Youngstown
State last January. Ten months later, Tressel took
a short-handed Buckeyes team into Ann Arbor
and denied Michigan a Big Ten title.
When was the last time Notre Dame won a
game that big?
White declined to discuss his list of candidates,
but he said it would be "shorter than longer."
"We are different and unique, and we have to
find somebody who fits Notre Dame and fits our
particular situation," White said. "I think that it's
fairly small."
What he meant was, this place isn't for
everyone
