Page 12 The Behrend Beacon Engelbert, Peterson lead women's volleyball team Former player Kellie Diehl becomes new coach by Mike Bello sports editor The women's volleyball team has one tough act to follow. Not only did the 2000 squad finish 15-13, including a 10-4 record in the AMCC conference, but the Lions finished second in the AMCC tournament to Frostburg. The team, whose overall record was skewed by difficult non- conference competition, retains almost every player from 2000, which makes expectations for this year that much greater. Newcomer Kellie Diehl, who knows a thing or two about Behrend vol leyball, will coach the Li ons for the upcoming sea son, replacing former coach Cindy Jacobelli. Diehl was a four-year starter for the team before graduating in 1992 and re turns to find a solid group of players who now know what it takes to get to the AMCC championship game. Mary Good, the only senior to graduate from last year's team, was perhaps one of the best volleyball players at Behrend. Good holds the record for most career kills (1028) and digs (1666). Her departure leaves a big hole to fill for the Lions. However, with six incoming fresh men on the roster, the Lions have a strong mix of youth and experience that could lead to an other stellar season and quite possibly the AMCC championship. Leading this year's volleyball team will be co captains Brianne Engelbert and Sarah Peterson and juniors Danielle Bemis, Rose Boni, and Pam Walters. Engelbert, a middle hitter/setter, racked up 170 kills and 325 digs last year on her way towards a place on the all-conference team, while Peterson, an outside hitter, returns in good health after suffering injuries that ruined her 2000 sea son. Bemis, another outside hitter, had a strong showing last year, piling up 247 kills and 423 digs while Boni had 235 digs at her defensive specialist position. The 2(X)1 Lion volleyball team welcomes six new recruits to this year's team: freshmen Kelly Cozad (outside hitter and middle back), Kyra Durinsky (outside hitter), Trish Krantz (middle hitter), Elizabeth Lorenz (defensive specialist), Ashley Ordy (setter and outside hitter), and Emily Waters (setter). Waters and Ordy will be counted upon early to provide relief for Engelbert at the setter position. 2843 2739 2677 2650 Three sophomores will look to improve on their strong showings last year. Jessica Niedermeyer, an outside hitter, recorded 222 kills last year while teammate Lauren Senkevich had 151 kills at her outside hitter position. Along with sophomore middle hitter Katie Butler, all three will be looked upon to provide strong show ings at the net with all-conference player Good now gone. Perritano, one of the most successful coaches ever at Behrend, enters his ninth season as head coach of the men's soccer program. The Lions, who went 11-10-1 in 2000 and 4-3 in the AMCC conference, will look to build upon last year's postseason success. They lost a heartbreaker to Frostburg in the AMCC title game 1-0 in over time, but went on to win their first game in their only appearance in the ECAC tournament before losing in round two by a 1-0 score. The Lion squad will be counting on offense and goaltending to pick up where last year's seniors left off. Gone are seniors James Martin, Dave Kowalczyk, Tommy Sieg, and Leo Hanley. Mar tin and Kowalczyk were a big part of the offense's scoring touch, while Sieg provided strong leader ship in goal. Those three, along with defensive back Hanley, leave a couple of holes on the team that will need to be filled by some of the returning start Seniors Chad Droz (midfielder/defensive back), Dan Falk (midfielder/forward), Chris Lightner (for ward), David Snook (midfielder/forward), and Mark Szewczykowski (midfielder) will be counted upon to lead the Behrend attack. Droz, Falk, and Szewczykowski were named to the AMCC all-con ference team in 2000. Junior forward Ryan Ohl will look to build upon his fine sophomore season. Sophomores Jeff Morris (midfielder/defensive back), Mark Steigerwald (defensive back), Travis Lightner (defensive back), and Jeffrey Ewing (de fensive back) will need to step up quickly for the Lions. They, along with sophomore goalie Jacob Hordych, who takes over for Sieg, form the core of defensive backs that Coach Perritano will rely upon for not only this year but the next few years as well. Sophomores Adrian Joseph, Andy Laver, and Ja son Falk will providr support at the midfield and forward positions for the older players. Seven freshmen join the Lions: Brian Hesch (de fensive back), Brian Vollant (defensive back), An drew Cecil (midfielder/forward), Eric Nyberg (midfielder/forward), John Andy McCormick (midfielder/forward), Jason Ferrier (midfielder), and William Fader (goalkeeper). These freshmen, along with the sophomores, will have to learn quickly about soccer at the college level because they will form the nucleus of the team in years to come. The Lions start their season off hosting the Herb Lauffer Tournament on Saturday against Moravian. The Lions also will be participating in the Fredonia State Tournament on Sept. 7 and 8 and begin their conference play at Penn State Altoona on Sept. 15. The men's team, which gave Perritano his 200th win last year, will be tested early on. The Lions will need the seniors and juniors to step up their play until the sophomores and freshmen can gain some much needed experience if they are to have a chance of building on last year's finish.
