The Lions have earned that title by winning the past four AMCC tournaments, including last year's against Frostburg State Uni versity. The Lions, under head coach Dan Perritano, finished last year with a 16-5 record (7-0 conference) and even made an appearance in the NCAA tournament. Behrend lost in the first round but still completed one of the best seasons ever com piled by the women's soccer teams. The 16 victories mark the most wins the women's soccer team has ever compiled, beating the old mark of 15 set in 1998. With everything the team has done the past few years (79-28-9 record since Perritano started the women's soccer program in 1995 as well as a 25-0 conference record the past four years), the question facing the 2001 team seems to be, "Where do they go from here?" It would seem the team has nowhere to go but down but with six returning seniors and a large crop of freshmen coming in from many different high schools, the team can almost feel that AMCC trophy in their hands for another year. With no juniors on the team, this year's seniors will be looked upon for leadership and hope to leave a winning impression on the younger players for the next few years. Cap tains Laura Furko, Diane Holtsford, and Michelle Malatesta return after Cross country squads look for more winning ways by Mike Bello sports editor After completing one of the most successful seasons ever at Behrend, the men's and women's cross coun try teams will look to build upon last year's finish for another run towards an AMCC title game. Both teams have a solid core of players returning from last year. That, added with a strong freshmen class which could easily make an impact on this year's teams, have first year head coach Dave Cooper "Our strength lies in the number of AMCC cham- pionship all the quality runners on each team. Our lack of experience on the college level may be a weakness." The men's squad is com ing off their impressive vic- tory over sec- and place La Roche in the AMCC title meet last year in which they won 21-46. The team returns several impact players, including AMCC all-conference play ers Chuck Orton and Kevin Ritzert. Ritzert was also named to the NCAA All-Mideast Region Team. In the early part of the season the Lions will look to make up for the loss of four seniors who were instrumen tal in their run through the postseason in 2000. Gone from a year ago are Dennis Halaszynski, Mark Suroviec, Greg Cooper, and Tyler Travis, but with two seniors and five juniors step ping up, the loss of those four players will be easier to take. Seniors Carl Alberico and Matt Heidecker will be counted on to lead the team, along with juniors Clint Altman, Frank Croft, Matt Grimmke, Brian Pratt, and Kevin Ritzert. With at least two years under their belts, these players will be looked upon to set an example for the seven fresh men competing in the 2001 season. Chuck Orton, the only sophomore on the team, joins newcomers Dan Alvis, Mike Bartlett, Steven Davis, Clayton Kirschner, Tim Schultheis, Matt Sprung, and Steve Warner. Since nearly half the team has yet to compete at the college level, the se niors and juniors will be pressured early on to carry the team until the freshmen can get their feet wet at some of the early invitationals, start- . f4,01` et ~ , Vo.oilit, fPi'l!..;ll : ''' Friday, August 31, 2001 he women's soccer team scrimmages to prepare for their season earning all-conference honors last year. Malatesta earned MVP hon ors in the conference with her out standing play in goal, as opponents scored only 32 goals last year (in cluding seven in the NCAA game with Nazareth) in 21 games. Malatesta allowed two goals or less in 16 of the team's 21 games and shut out opponents in nine games during the 2000 season. Furko, who is a previous AMCC ing on Saturday when the Lions com pete in the Buffalo State Invitational. "The biggest factor in attaining an AMCC title for the women and for the men to repeat will be confidence," said Cooper. "I see no lack of that with the teams so far. The training has been a blend of high mileage and designated paces. The work ethic has been very good. "Our strength lies in the number of quality runners on each team. Our lack of experience on the college level -Coach Dave Cooper may be a weakness." The women's cross-country team comes off a runner-up title in the AMCC to perennial powerhouse Frostburg. Last year marked the fifth straight time the Lady Lions have placed second in the AMCC, each time losing to Frostburg. With nearly everyone from last year returning, the chances for a title seem a little closer than before. The Lions lost only one senior from last year's team, Tina Rubay, and only one junior, Jessica Coe. The lack of experience may be the toughest ob stacle this team may have to face, but with all but one player returning, the team is looking to go nowhere but up. Coming back for their second sea son are sophomores Lyndsey Boor, Jessica Knapp, Brandi Napenas, An drea Sanko, and Kathy Perry. Sanko earned all-conference honors in 2000 for her freshmen debut, as well as being named Newcomer of the Year in the AMCC. Incoming freshmen include Tara Burgess, Clairessa Manelick, Marlena McNutt, Jessica Sarver, and Sue Szafran. The Lions know that with such a young team, whatever happens this year could lead to bigger and better things the next few years, and the possibility of Frostburg holding that AMCC second place trophy for once. • °Nola ' . , player of the year, and Holtsford (also a defensive hack) will provide experience at the midfielder posi tion. After only losing three seniors, Katie Giles, Jill Barbisch, and Bethany Cummings, coach Perritano's squad welcomes nine freshmen. Jamie Pysola, Lindsay Patton, Niki Clouse, and Leslie Ferraro arrive with hopes of help ing the team out right away at the forward position. Ferraro, Clouse, Maria Gahagen, Carrie Smock, and Elizabeth Snook provide backup at the midfielder position, while Natasha Edrington and Sarah Hogue arrive hoping to contribute as defen sive backs. The Lions begin their season play ing host to the Herb Lauffer Tour nament, named after the late Behrend men's soccer coach Herb Lauffer, Saturday at the Behrend Fields starting at 2 p.m. The Lions easily won the tournament last year and have been gearing up to repeat that effort this year. The first con ference game is scheduled for Sat. at Penn State Altoona. After earn ing win number 200 last year (as head of both the men's and women's soccer programs), Coach Perritano will look to lead the women's squad to another AMCC title and quite possibly their fourth ECAC (East ern College Athletic Conference) postseason appearance. With a mix ture of all-star seniors leading the way for a large group of up and com ing freshmen and sophomores, this year's squad will be the team to beat in the AMCC. =IIZEIMMEMI Page 11
