Page 2 The Behrend Beacon FROM FRONT PAGE POLICE One challenge Donahue has faced in gaining acceptance is the misconception some members of the Behrend community have that Behrend's officers aren't "real" police officers. "Many students only see the officers out writing parking tickets or unlocking doors for them, so they get the idea that the officers are just security guards. Our officers actually have many more responsibilities than that," Donahue said. Donahue said all eight service officers, himself included, have been commissioned by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania - just as any municipal police officer is commissioned. In addition, Behrend's officers also have to meet Penn State standards, which can be even more demanding than state requirements. These standards include college education and prior job experience. Another misconception Donahue has faced is that the officers won't be properly trained. But he pointed out all commissioned officers are required by the state to qualify annually with a sidearm, even though the officers don't currently carry sidearms while on duty. The University also requires armed officers to qualify with weapons three to four times a year. Donahue is hopeful the process will be completed within the next few months and that the officers can be armed by the end of the academic year. Even if the University grants permission this semester, it could take longer to get the officers armed. Officers need practice on a firing range, which can be hard to access during the winter months. ARC gets name change: now Dunker Center The former Athletics and Recreation Center, opened to the public last spring, has been renamed the Junker Center. The Penn State Board of Trustees approved the name change in recognition of trustee Edward P. "Ted" Junker 111 and his family. The Junkers have been long-time supporters of Behrend's athletics program, which they endowed with a $2 million gift in 1997. Junker and his wife, Barbara, live in Erie and are both Penn State alumni. Junker is a director and past chair of Behrend's Council of Fellows and is the chair of the college's campaign committee. Penn State raises tuition The University Board of Trustees approved a 7.79 percent tuition increase in August for the 2001-02 academic year. The increase includes a base tuition increase of 5.76 percent and an additional increase of $66 per semester to support special initiatives in salaries and facilities. Open House Nights in Astronomy return The first Open House Night in Astronomy for 2001-02 school year is scheduled for August 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Otto Behrend Science Building. The topic of the night is "Measuring Distances in the Universe" and it will be presented by Dr. Darren Williams, assistant professor of physics and astronomy. Williams will discuss the methods used by astronomers to measure the distances to planets, stars, and galaxies. r ..... ism um En min um umw~l INN elloi 1111•1 11101 NEI ma Ina WE ••• ism um Rim me me me I Interested in joining the BeaCon 9 • 1 •Develop writing skills •Work with professionals •Get academic credit or a stipend •Meet new friends ." .... ......!......„....„.:,...:i....,,:...,:::...;:.;,:i.:.3..igigti0tigi.,i,,,,,„.„..,,„.........2„,,:,,,_..,:.4....,,.. .. ..
