The director of Beetlejuice, Sleepy
Hollow and Batman (the good one)
returns to revamp the classic Planet
of the Apes. Tim Burton's film
follows the 1968 beginning where a
pilot crash lands on a strange planet
and finds a brutal, primal place
where apes are in charge. From
there, Burton breaks from the
original and unloads a variety of
surprises. In addition to radical plot
changes, Burton also breaks new
ground in design, makeup and
visual effects that earn him a
coveted position as a summer
blockbuster. The film stars Mark
Wahlberg as the astronaut, but
also casts a host of other
well-known stars.

To Go

Summer Lovin'
Songs to cure the summertime blues
Well, it's hard to believe, but summer has arrived at last--at least as far as
school is concerned. It's time to trade in that notebook for a pair of sun-
glasses, but first you've got to get Erie to cooperate. While you're waiting
for the weather to catch up to your mood, a bouncy, summery tune may be
just the thing to make you forget that it's still 50 degrees outside. Here are
10 of my favorite wishin'-for-the-sun songs. Check 'em out or do a little
investigating on your own. It's a sure-fire way to bring summer just a step
closer!
"Kokomo." This Beach Boys' hit brings to mind all the trappings of the
ideal tropical vacation in Kokomo, "where you wanna go to get away from
it all." Upbeat and filled with the characteristic harmonies of the Boys,
"Kokomo" will switch you into fantasy mode, if only for a few minutes.
"My Girl." The Temptations standard is a classic ode to every gal out
there who has brought joy into the life of the fella she loves. A peppy song
in the doo-wop style, it cites the power of love to brighten up the darkest
and coldest day. "I've got sunshine on a cloudy day. When it's cold outside,
I've got the month of May."
"I Can See Clearly Now." This optimistic tune by Johnny Nash is a
reminder that no matter what we may be going through right now, there is
always hope. You may be operating on two hours of sleep a night in order
to finish up all those projects and study for those exams, but in a week you
will be afforded the luxury of a full night's sleep. Remember those? And
don't forget about the impending commencement of that summer weather.
"Look all around, nothin' but blue skies ... I can see clearly now, the rain
has gone ... It's gonna be a bright, bright sunshiny day."
"American Dream." Along the same lines of "Kokomo," the Nitty Gritty
Dirt Band sets an inviting fantasy scene in this song which has a great
tropical beat. Most of us are probably in the same boat as the speaker here,
unable to take that ideal vacation for lack of funds. But sometimes dream
ing about it can be almost as satisfying! "Voila! An American dream. Yeah,
we can travel, girl, without any means when it's as easy as closin' your
eyes..."
"So Much in Love." This bouncy barbershop song hails hack from the
early sixties when it was performed by The Tymes, but it is as effective as
ever in its ability to recall youthful idealism and paint a picture of long
walks by the shoreline and the joys of first love. Perhaps it is excessively
starry-eyed, but an over-dose of idealism never hurt anyone. And besides,
it's just fun to listen to. "As we stroll by the sea together under stars
twinkling high above, so in love are we two, no one else but me and you. So
in love, so much in 10ve..."
"Sunshine On My Shoulders." For those lazy summer days when the sun
has settled into a haze over the city and you just feel like laying down in a
field and making dandelion necklaces. Easily the slowest song on the list,
this lovely John Denver tune is an ode to sunshine and the joy that it brings,
carrying a wish for sunshine for the one he loves. "Sunshine on my shoul
ders makes me happy. Sunshine in my eyes can make me cry. Sunshine on
the water looks so lovely. Sunshine almost always makes me high."
"June is Bustin' Out All Over." Just for fun, this song comes from the
musical Carousel, which takes place in a New England town which
apparently suffers as long a winter as we do. I'm sure we'll all be agreeing
with its ecstacy at the arrival of summer when we finally get through a
week of temperatures in the 70s and 80s. "May was full of promises, but
she didn't keep 'em quick enough for some, and the crowd of doubtin'
Thomases was prcdictin' that the summer'd never come. But it's comin', by
gum, you can feel it come..."
"Weave Me the Sunshine." This Peter Paul and Mary ditty is similar to "I
Can See Clearly Now" in its message of hope despite difficult experiences.
It's also an outright invitation for sunshine, which we can all use plenty of,
to come join our lives. "Weave, weave, weave me the sunshine out of the
fallen rain. Weave me the hope of a new tomorrow and fill my cup again."
"Summer Nights." From the musical Grease, this naughty song has
proven to be one of the most popular in the show. Taking us through a
summer romance from first date to heartbreak, it's a raucous song that's
tons of fun. "Summer days driftin' away but, oh, those summer nights!"
"Feelin' Groovy." Exactly how we all want to feel, though most of us
probably wouldn't put it precisely that way. Simon and Garfunkel's laid
back hit describes a mountaintop moment right in the middle of an ordinary
day. I hope this summer is filled with such moments for us all. "I got no
needs to do, no promises to keep. I'm dappled and drowsy and ready to
sleep. Let the mornin' time drop all its petals on me. Life, I love you. All is
groovy!"
