MEN'S BASKETBALL something that would have seemed absurd when the Panthers were only 2-7 a month ago. Behrend did shoot nearly 45% from the floor, as opposed to the Panthers’ 47%, but were only 1-9 from three-point When the Lions couldn't convert from the outside, they went to the inside to their two biggest players, 6’6” Curren and 6’B” Randy Conley. The Panthers’ size was no match for the two Behrend centers. Curren was 7-10 from the floor and had a game high 19 points. Conley, used sparingly the entire year, was 5-7 with 11 points. The Lions were undtfle to establish a strong rebounding game, however, which hurt the team in the end. After a few days of rest, Behrend hosted an independent contest with St. John Fisher, who the Lions defeated last year by two points. Behrend had an overall strong offensive outing, but St. John Fisher made 15 of 19 free throws to secure the win 66-60. Behrend converted 5 of their 9 free throws and shot 45% from the floor, including 9 three pointers, but were outrebounded by a margin of 15. St. John Fisher (14-6) also had 14 offensive rebounds, giving them many second scoring chances that Behrend did not have. Curren once again led the Lions in points, dropping in 14 points and being 6-10 in shooting. Casey Ponsoll had 13 points in the game while Matt Keith, after numerous sub-par games, had 12 points, including 3 three-pointers. Orris led the Lions with 6 rebounds, but as a team they were unable to stop Fisher’s center Mark Niggli, who was 8-14 for 23 points. The Behrend men finish out their season with games at Pitt- Greensburg on Wednesday, February 14, and then on Saturday the 17th at home against Lake Erie. Both teams suffered double-digit losses to Behrend earlier this year and should not give the Lions much run for their money. Behrend’s last two contests also give them a chance to refine their game heading into the playoffs, beginning on February 21, which could prove a challenge if they run into Pitt-Bradford and possibly Frostburg State as well. Behrend will need to be on top of their game, which they have been off and on, if they are to secure the #2 seed from Frostburg this Saturday, and if they are to make it to the AMCC championship game. This is a goal that has been on their minds since the end of last year’s season (at least for the players who were here then).
