, . FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2001 JV basketball finishes off mediocre season by Jeanine Noce assistant sports editor Behrend's 2000-2001 junior varsity basketball team finished their demanding season of three months this past Sunday, January 28. They played Allegheny College at 1:00 p.m. in Erie Hall and were defeated. This team of eleven players was striving to prove that Behrend's junior varsity team are skilled players. The end of the season left the men with a record of 3-6. The competition was tough, however, the men's junior varsity team worked extremely hard to accomplish working as a team for the first time. Eight freshmen and one sophomore were the main members of the team. One or two players from the Behrehd Lions varsity team also would assist the junior varsity with their games. Two years ago, Behrend had a varsity and junior varsity team. Last year there were not a sufficient amount of players for Behrend to have a junior varsity team, however, this year the sports program was Privileged to have a large number of men playing varsity and junior varsity basketball. The conditioning for basketball began on October 15. On this date, all of the potential varsity and junior varsity basketball players began conditioning. Try -outs were held and the varsity kept fifteen players and the remaining men played for the junior varsity team. Practices were held after the men's and women's basketball team's practices in Erie Hall. They were generally one and a half to two hours in length and were held five or six days a week. The men's junior varsity competed against several local colleges such as Buffalo State, Thiel, and Mercyhurst. The farthest away college that the team competed against was Buffalo State, which is approximately an hour and a half away from the Behrend campus. The athletic department chose to compete against colleges that were in close vicinity to Behrend. Brad Wright, the shooting guard on the team stated, "my favorite experience was traveling to Olean College and playing in an armory. I also thought that the team improved tremendously throughout the season. The team did not know any of the members previous to this year and worked extremely well with each other." Patrick Mashuda was the coach and Brian Emick was the assistant coach of the men's junior varsity team. Mashuda was chosen as the junior varsity coach for Behrend this past August for the first time. He previously was the assistant coach at La Roche College for seven years. Initially, Coach Mashuda wanted to spend more time with the varsity in recruiting players; however, his position as head coach worked out extremely well. He has the position of assistant coach with the varsity and spends a great deal of his time with each of the teams. Brian Emick, the assistant coach, was previously a student here at Behrend and was on the men's basketball team. He graduated recently and was chosen for the position of junior varsity assistant coach. Coach Mashuda felt that the team's best performance was the Buffalo State game on WOMEN'S BASKETBALL School Penn State Behrend Penn State Altoona Pitt-Greensburg Pitt-Bradford Lake Erie Frostburg La Roche Behrend 52 Lake Erie 50 Behrend 28 Lake Erie 24 Lake Erie Player Ballentine Whitacre Berardinell Bolden Chiapponi Frabotta Foglyano Behrend Player O'Lare Philips Sanders Costanzo Mauser Sorensen Charnock Mozdy McGarvey Behrend 87 La Roche 64 Behrend La Roche La Roche Player Henderson Stuart Balbach Cousins Pencak Wandriso Lyon Blake Rosser Behrend FG 1-2 7-13 Player O'Lare Philips Sanders Bemis C.R. The team was defeated, but he felt that they played well and had strong teamwork skills.. Coach Mashuda also believes that the junior varsity's toughest opponent was Mercyhurst North East where the team was defeated, 76-62. Coach Mashuda felt that the most effective play for the team was when the members played major sets and then played reads off of that. The team was effective in using the two major sets, which were the break, or the two-guard set as an offensive play against their opponents. Coach Mashuda stated that each individual player could work on a number of things for next year's season. The goal of each of the junior varsity members is to attempt to be a part of the men's varsity team. Brian Werner, the small forward on the team, agrees with coach Mashuda in believing, "Mercyhurst North East was the team's toughest opponent. They were an extremely athletic team and were also very quick and played a fast-paced game. I also believe that the team improved as a whole and the players improved individually throughout the season." Coach Mashuda's final thoughts on the season were positive. He stated, "the team had a pretty good year and that they worked hard as a team. The members had fun, practiced often and were successful." The men's junior varsity team has begun to work well and learn each others playing tactics. Next year, the team is hoping to improve their teamwork, skills and overall record.
