FRIDAY, JANUARY 12, 2001 Talent vs. Money, what decides the Championship? country out, despite a fluke safety late in the game. For many people, it was utter joy seeing Heisman Trophy winner Chris Caught in the Grasp Weinke under pressure all night, fumbling once and Douglas Smith throwing two interceptions. It was absolutely marvelous, but what topped the whole night off was seeing a very dumb - founded Bobby Bowden answer ques tions at the press conference. He is a very good coach. but his weaknesses were very accentuated in the Seminoles The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) is now over and once again, unfortunately, those in charge can say it worked perfectly; they crowned an unprecedented national championship in the Oklahoma Sooners and the masterful Bob Stoops. However, if Florida State would have won the Orange Bowl, then four different teams would have had an argument. Only Miami and Florida State would have had a legitimate complaint. I realized I have talked about this before, hut let us look one more time at the behind the scenes aspects. Before we delve too deep, let us just compliment the Sooners for their domination of the Seminoles on January 3rd. The BCS had a game that involved Oregon State and Notre Dame. The Beavers of Oregon State crushed the Fighting Irish; this was also a very exciting event in the college football bowl season. However, this exposed the problem of whether or not the right team was selected. Four other teams were ranked higher than Notre Dame in the final BCS standings before the bowl games were announced. The three teams with the biggest gripe were Virginia Tech, Nebraska, and Kansas State. Virginia Tech dominated Clemson in their game, hut their schedule may BEHREND SPORTS MEN'S BASKETBALL C.R. Nebraska obliterated Northwestern who were probably not worthy opponents in a season that could be described in only one word for Northwestern: lucky. Nebraska also had one more loss than the Fighting Irish. However, two of Kansas State's losses came from the number one Sooners. One was very close, and Kansas State did easily heat Tennessee in the Cotton Bowl. So why is this such a big deal? Well it comes down to that green stuff one more time. Notre Dame was awarded 12.5 million dollars for reaching a BCS game. Notre Dame does not belong to a conference: they are an independent. This means they get to keep all that money. Is this special treatment of sorts simply because the words 'Notre Dame' will draw people to the game? I think so. A bigwig at Notre Dame was interviewed during the game and said the extra money goes to financial aid for the students. Well, here's my theory about that. First priority is the athletic department and they will get new equipment or what have you. Then comes something that just needed a little bit more funding to he completed. Then the money goes to financial aid. ~~~:~ ': WOMEN'S BASKETBALL School Penn State I3ehrend Pitt-Greensburg Pitt-Bradford Lake Erie La Roche Penn State Altoona Frostburg Allegheny 65 Behrend 49 Allegheny Behrend Allegheny Player Pollock Hinkle Popovac Piekanski Innocenti Pai one Kankosk i Jones I3ourdeau Stelanchin Nan eth Behrend Player O'Laie Phillips Tanner Sanders Costanzo Bemis Sorensen Mozdy Juniata 67 Behrend 60 30 Juniata Behrend Juniata Player Young Grove Shoup Steinbeiser Preslovich Flint Kelly Shover Behrend Player Tanner O'Lare Philips Sanders Costanzo Bemis Charnock Mozdy Eastern Conference C.R. Once again a little bit of special treatment is involved. The financial aid office probably expects some money, a set amount, from the athletic department, so the money is not a surprise help at all. I swear I ant done rambling about this BCS stuff (for this year). It is just that "tweaking'' needs to he done. Although I must say that the fact that the Rose Bowl is next year's championship game really throws me off. This means that Penn State could win the Big Ten and have to play in another howl. Winning the Pac -10 and Big Ten meant playing in the Rose Bowl. I told you there was more to rtunhle on next year. NATIONAL SPORTS NI-11. ST4 NDINGS York Giants Wanted! Spring Breakers! Cancun.
