FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2000 Astronomy Open House looks at the eye by Ryan Russell staff writer On Thursday, November 2nd, Dr, Jonathan Hall conducted an as tronomy open house in room 101 of the Science building, with the topic of “Light and Color.” Dr. Hall began the night by explaining several early theories of light and then broke up the night’s topic into two sections: “What is Light?” and “The Eye.” The first section, “What is Light?", included a large range of colored light displays and examples so that every one could see several examples of Dr. Jonathan Hall conducted an astronomy open house discussion about “What is light?” and “The eye”. Future open houses will include use of the School of Science’s new 18 centimeter refractor. Dr. Hall also showed the stunned audience how to see the viewable colors in the light spectrum by explaining how to look at the morning dew with the sun to your back. Dr. Hall also talked about wavelengths on the light spectrum and how they cannot be seen by the hu man eye. At this point, the talk quickly changed into part two of the discus sion. “The Eye.” Dr. Hall once again wowed the audience with his knowl edge of how our eyes work and how they communicate with our brain to let us not only see, but to see in color. The night then of ficially ended with Dr. Hall thanking everyone for coming out and announc ing that the next open house would be on Thursday, December 7th, and would cover “The Big Bang.” The next open house sounds like a really “big” time, so Behrend, be there or be square.
